Robert ("00') Martin is tho undisputed champion long-distance runner of the west, and one of tho stars expected to carry Ogden colors col-ors to tho fore in tho Olympic trials at Pasadena. lie is a star of the A-l type, a polished runner and a veteran at the game. While a student at tho Lewis institute insti-tute in Chicago Bob staVted his athletic ath-letic career. At that time ho was a member of the track, baseball and basketball teams. While at the Lewis Institute ho established a record of 4:3G in tho mile and a mark of 2 minutes min-utes flat In the half mile. He captained cap-tained the team in 1910 and took third place in the mile In the interscholastic championships. Running under the colors of tho Chicago A. A. in 1911. he finished second in the two-mile indoor championship. At Stocktorti Cal.. the same year Martin finished third in the mile against tho great Crabbe inv tho Pacific Pa-cific coast A. A. He captained the cross-country team thai year and finished second to the famous Mike Mason In the two-mile two-mile run. In the cross-country run staged by the school. Martin showed class by finishing second to Mason. Mason at taht time ' was regarded as one of Amcrica'3 greatest runners. In tho interclass meet ho copped the two-mile two-mile run in 10:30 on a small track. As a member of the freshman team, he won the two-mllo in the intercolleglates intercollegl-ates at 10:1S. He finished second in the mile in 4:35. In 1913 ho won the Central A. A. U. three-mile event. He holds victories over Stout and Millard of the Olympic .club of San Francisco. From 1913 until 1915 Martin did not compote. In 1915 he finished second in the far western championships In the flvc-milo run. ' p From 1915 until 1919 Martin again placed the spikes away, but came back In 1919 with a world of ginger. At Denver last June ho won the annual 10 and 2-5 mile event, breaking tho former record hold by Ted Johnson, covering the distance in 1 hour, 2 minutes min-utes and 17 seconds. Ho won the flvo-mlle flvo-mlle event in the Salt Lake service men's games last- fall in :9 minutes, and copped the Ogden Armistice day) event with yards to spare. At Paau-dena, Paau-dena, New Year's day of this year, he! won tho four-mile event In 22 minutes! and 23 seconds, and on Mnrch 2-t, at Salt Lake, copped the five-mllo Jaunt of tho Doseret gymnasium in 29 minutes min-utes and 32 seconds. Martin is training train-ing for the games and will be one of America's greatest contenders in tlie' five-mile run. |
