Peter Garton, owner of the foundry, is cold and and selfish and has been the means of driving to the wall Angus Mulr, his old business associate. Muir and bis pretty daughter, daugh-ter, Janet, live in poor financial straits in a humble cottage. Tod picks up an acquaintance with them. Later, his quick wit enables him to save his employer's life when a heavy timber falls, though Tod' himself is badly hurt. Old Garton is affected by the boy's sacrifice and, taking him to! his mansion, looks after him while hej regains his strength and then decides) to adopt him. Tod tells Muir of hlsj good fortune, innocent of tho strong enmity botween the Scotchman and; Garton, and Muir drives him out of his house. Thereupon, Tod gets Jonet a job in the Garton offices and the-two the-two evolve a clever and successful scheme to bring about a reconciliation between Mulr and Ga'rton.
