Show TEUTON PERFIDY. If Germany were deliberately challenging chal-lenging us to war she could do no more than she has done. The Healdton atrocity atroc-ity is almost beyond belief. When Germany proclaimed the " barred zones" she also designated safe zones, in which merchant vessels would be- secure from attack and she prescribed pre-scribed certain rules that the ships must follow. The Healdton 's captain, accepting accept-ing German faith at its face value, was careful to remain in the "safe" zone. He painted the American flag on the sides of the ship and at night carried a big illuminated sign. All of the precautions simply served to make his ship a target for a treacherous treach-erous attack. The German submarine lurked in the safe zone until an American Ameri-can ship was lured into the trap and then the electric sign guided the torpedo tor-pedo which' destroyed the vessel and many American lives. The horror of the case consists as much in the proof of human baseness, treachery and brutality as in tho murder mur-der of the American Bailors. The Germans Ger-mans have sunk to inconceivable depths by this act of perfidy. |
