Suit to recover $50,000 damages for i alleged defamation of character was filed in the Third district court yesterday yester-day by Katherine Tingley against the Telegram Publishing company. j Katherine Tingley is described in the ! complaint as being the leader and of- j ficial head of the Universal Brotherhood j Theosophical societv with headquarters at Point Loma, CalLt. The complaint charges that on March 26. 1916, the defendant company published pub-lished in the Salt Lake Telegram an article under the head "The 'Purple Mother' of Point Loma." The account is included in the complaint and purports pur-ports to be a report of a suit brought iu California against Mrs. Tingley and Mrs. Elizabeth Churchill Mayer Spalding, Spal-ding, widow of the late Albert G. Spal-' Spal-' ding of baseball and sporting goods fame, by the two sons of Mr. Spalding I to break their father's will. I In the complaint filed yesterday Mrs, i Tingley alleges that the account as published pub-lished "is defamatory and slanderous, since it attributes "to her a design to get control of the Spalding millions and of having undertaken to influence the will of tho late sporting goods king so that he would leave his wealth to his wife, in the hope that she would profit thereby. This, she avers, is entirely false, and that publication of such imputations are defamatory. She asks the court to give her damages against the publishing company in the amount of $50,000, which she declares is the measure 'of injury to her character and reputation. |
