Show Opening-Day Festivities Opening Day Arrangements Complete; Grounds Are Drying Rapidly. GOVERNOR SIMON BAMBERGER BAMBER-GER of Utah and Chief Justice J. E. Prick of the supreme court are cither excessively brave men or they are of that type which refuses to heed a warning. About three weeks ago we exposed a vile plot concocted hy the gang of baseball blackhanders which has its lair in the Walker Bank building, and whose bell wether is Frank Murphy. We sounded a fair note, but evidently it has failed of its well-intentioned well-intentioned purpose, for both Governor Bamberger and Judge Frick have lent a ready acquiescence in the sehomo, and even seem to be extremely enthusiastic about it. Mayor W. Mont Ferrv, owing to his absence from the city, has thn-s fnr escaped es-caped tile machinations of the gangsters, gang-sters, but they tire lying in wait for him and will pounce on him upon his return today. H isimfnrtiinrite that three of our (Continued on Followuig Page.) SMS WILL REICH HOME EARLY FRIDAY (Continued From Preceding Page.) painful conditions materially. Porter-vine Porter-vine has been one of this kind. Tomorrow night Skipper Bill Bern-hard, Bern-hard, after a month almost to a day of labors with- vets and rooks, will herd his crew aboard a train. The squad will go to Los Angeles, where the boys will spend most of Tuesday shaking hands with the devil fish at the beach and otherwise kid themsolves into believing be-lieving thev are having a good time. Tuesday afternoon they leave the land of the" Peerless Leader and the Firebrand Fire-brand and move on to Las Vegas, Nev., where, ou Wednesday, they play a game of baseball. The following day, Thursday, Thurs-day, thev repeat the game of baseball at'Milfo'rd. On Friday morning, at 6 o'clock in tho morning, the 1017 Samts will arrive in Salt Lake. May Be Excursion. There is a prospect of an excursion from Salt Lake to Milford for the exhibition ex-hibition game there Thursday. The Salt Lake Route will offer reduced rates for the trip if a party of ten or more can bo hustled together. For that number a rate of one and one-third fares for the round trip would apply. In the event that an excursion party were arranged tho baseball greoters would leave Salt Lake at 10:30 o'clock -vt ;i,, ;kf pannliinn MilfnrH in ncuuoaunj ' " p . timo to welcome the baints coming from Las Vegas. Owing to the custom followed by B vast majority of our very best people of being in a state of unconsciousness at 6 o'clock in the morning the delegation dele-gation w-hich will meet tho Saints at the station is not likely to be comparable compara-ble iu size with that which greeted the B. Y. U. basketball team at Frovo Friday. Fri-day. However, a few of the more ha'rdy will probablv venture forth. Arriving here Fifady will give Bern-hard Bern-hard four davs of acclimatization opportunities op-portunities be'fore the opening game on Tuesday. No doubt there will be workouts twice a day, and a little Regular-Goofigan game may be started occasionally. The' four days will give the dockers a chance to get some of that inside information without which it is impossible for them to permit n baseball season to open. The advice of tho railbirds is accounted of incalculable incalcula-ble value bv managers of baseball clubs, who are each spring reminded that the whole world seems to know so very, very much about starting a ball club and running it and they themselves so verv, verv little. The exhibition games at Las "Vegas and MiU'ord will serve to break tho railroad rail-road journey for the Saints, and they should arrive in town in first-class form. . Annnnn(a T?nloacpS ToT! 1 C Vl t . It is expected that Bernhard will tonight to-night announce the squad which he will bring to Salt Lake. Indications are that only one or two rookies will be left behind. There is a possibility that Bunny Brief may be detained at his home in Michigan for several days, or even longer. Reports from Traverse City are to the effect that while the condition of Mrs. Brief has shown improvement after aft-er a delicate operation, her state is still grave. If the improvement continues, con-tinues, of course, Bunny will be able to leave home in time to get into the opening game here. Should Mrs. Brief suffer a setback, however, the club would have to open without Bunny's services. In that event Earl Sheely would be stationed at first base. Bern-hard Bern-hard has also given Billy Orr and Johnny John-ny Tobin some practice at first, so that the situation is not actually acute. Until the big leaguers close their training seasons and put their rooks to the test in early-season games thore will be small chance of acquiring any more pitchers, so that Bernhard will stand on what he has. Reports from - Porterville leave no doubt that the pilot has confidence in his slab stalT but the other clubs may show j strongly in the pitching department that he will have to hustle for increased in-creased effectiveness. Bernhard has five good men in the veterans, and every one of them is reported to be in excellent excel-lent shape, which is really the important, impor-tant, item in pre-season calculations. In addition Bill seems to think he has a find in Adolph Schinkle, a gigantic voiregster picked up at Fresno. Blake also appears to have a chance of sticking. stick-ing. Reports on Bliss, Kersten aud Jones are meager. Lydiatt has been released. Tommy Quinlan Here. Tommy Quinlan, the best outfielder in the league, arrived in Salt Lake yesterday yes-terday ready for work. Tommy reports himse'lf in tiptop shape and looks the part. As in precoding years the chief reliance re-liance of the club to win ball games will lie in hitting. The same old fence busters who have performed so gallantly gallant-ly in tho past will be with us agniu, a'nd their strength will be augmented by Crandall, Tobin aud Dubnc, tho lat- (Ootatlnued on Page Pour.) Brief and Bath are all well over .3U0 hitters. Hannah Han-nah and Sheely shouTd be very near that mark, and Y'rnndall and Tobin may also be close. Billy Orr is due for a resumption of clouting and Gislason no doubt will be even better at " Retting on" than ho was last season. All around, tho 3917 Saints appear to have the punch with the stick. Anyhow, we'll soon see. Mrs. Buddy Ryan yesterday received a telegram from her husband asking her to join him at San Francisco at once. In the absence of nows from Porterville as to the reason for Buddy's Bud-dy's trip some fear was felt at baseball base-ball headquarters concerning the Saint captain's health. Last night the following fol-lowing telegram was received at The Tribune o.tlice: "P.ernhnrd says Ryan goes to San Francisco on business. Will Lie back Sunday. ' ' |
