Show Ill RESTRICT ENTRY NUMBER FOR U. 1EET Board Decides Only Firsts and Seconds Can Compete Com-pete for State Honors on May 11. The state high school track am field meet this year will be limited to first and second place winners in the division meets. This was decided, upon by the members of the board of control of the Utah High School Athletic association at a meeting held yesterday in the Des-eret Des-eret gymnasium. The limitations placed upon the high school athletes will remove one of the great obstacles in the annual meets. Last year the bars were thrown down and a school was permitted to enter as many men as it desired, but the state association would pay the expenses of point winners only. This gave the Salt Lake schools a decided advantage, inasmuch in-asmuch as there was practically no expense ex-pense here and the local institutions - sent in all their athletes, regardless of ability. This caused much congestion in many events that brought about dissatisfaction dis-satisfaction on the part of out-of-town schools. With the new rule in effect this year, only the best athletes will be in competition, compe-tition, which should make matters easier for the officials, and also cut down the time. Heretofore it has generally taken three or four hours to complete the meet. About ten men would compete in each event under this ruling. ' Set Standard Marks. Another innovation to be Introduced this year will be a standard In the different dif-ferent events. Certain marks must be made or else the division will not be represented. Winning athletes must make the different events in the following follow-ing time or better: 100-yard dash 11 seconds. 220-yard dash 25 seconds. itO-yard dash o7 seconds. 8S0-yard run 2:15. Mile run 5:10. 220-yard hurdles 2S seconds. SSO-yard relaj 1:28. Tho following distances must be accomplished ac-complished to be eligible for the state meet: Broad jump 18 feet 6 inches. . Pole vault S feet. Shotput 38 feet. Discus throw 85 feet. The annual high school meet this year will in all probability be held May 11 at Cummings field. The University of Utah and the Tjtah High School Athletic association as-sociation would be In charge of the contests. con-tests. The "U" agreed to pay the expenses ex-penses of the first-place winners in the division meet and also first-place holders hold-ers In the state contests. The B. Y. U. of Provo and the Agricultural college of Logan also entered bids, but the meet is practically conceded to the local institution. institu-tion. Must Split Division. The university representatives declared it would be possible to have tennis and baseball championship contests on the same day. but little toward this end has been accomplished. It was declared that officials of the association would probably attend all division di-vision meets. In the southern division the question of travel again caused difficulty dif-ficulty and the matter ' was finally settled set-tled by allowing two division meets, and it is probable several of the standards will not be reached, so it will cut the list from that section to a small extent. In Utah county, which has both the Nebo and Alpine divisions, a joint meet will me held May 4. That all division meets must be held on May 4 or before, if weather condi-j condi-j tions permit, was also decided upon. The teams must send in their entries to Secretary Sec-retary C. Oren Wilson before Tuesday night. May 7. Officials for the meet will be coaches of the universities and colleges of the state, and the custom, as in the past, of using University of Utah athletes, will be deposed. Prominent former athletes will assist. Football Finds Favor. Tlmt fnnthflll mnv hp talroTi nr in many country schools was indicated yesterday, when it was decided to hold division meetings to arrange gridiron schedules. Football in the Salt Lake division di-vision is well established, and it was declared that several more schools in the southern portion of the state would take up the pigskin game. The board discussed baseball, and the schedules will be arranged by the different dif-ferent divisions, although it is probable proba-ble the respective board members will call the meeting. The report on the state basketball tournament was read and the officials declared the contests successful in every detail. Osmon Justesen of Grantsville, representing repre-senting the Salt Lake division, and L. H. Peterson of Provo, Nebo division, were the absent members. Those who attended were: J. W.
