Show WOMAN CONDUCTOR KILLED IN ASSAULT First of England's Female Car Operators Opera-tors Loses Her Life "While on Duty. LONTX)N, March 24. The first of England's En-gland's women street car conductors to give her life for her country is Elizabeth Mitchell, who has died from an assault made on her by a passenger. Miss Mitchell. It was stated at the inquest, in-quest, was abused by a passenger for not keeping the car waiting long enough for him to get off. She replied by asking for hia fare, and when he refused to pay she would not let him alight. Thereupon he knocked her into the road. Another passenger pas-senger detained the man and turned him over to the police. The girl's assailant grave his nam as Albert E. Smith and disappeared after paying a fine. The girl continued working, work-ing, but died a few days after the assault as-sault from influenza and syncope. It was testified at the inquest that her death was due indirectly to her fall weakening her powers of resistance to disease. Tho man who hit her la now being- sought. |
