Show MUCH WAR MATERIAL MADE AT COVENTRY Present Lord Mayor and Big Manufacturer Manufac-turer Formerly Operated Small Biwcle Shop in Boston. COVENTH, England, ' May 4. This city, like its big neighbor, Birmingham, has been turned into a great center for the manufacture of war material. Before Be-fore the war Coventry had a great ordnance ord-nance works, which is now engaged on the manufacture of all sizes of guns and gun mountings for the navy, field carriages car-riages and equipment for the army and small tools for the other factories throughout the country. Besides, there were the great automobile auto-mobile makers, who. since the outbreak of war, have turned their attention to the making of airplanes and engines for them. The number of machines completed complet-ed weekly in these factories reaches a figure undreamed of even two years ago. Other firms In the city and vicinity have enormously Increased their output of machine and other guns, while fac- tories which before the war knew nothing noth-ing of munitions, are now busy on articles arti-cles which go to make up the equipment of great armies. The present lord mayor of Coventry, Alex Hill, started business not many years ago as the proprietor of a small bicycle shop in Columbus avenue, Boston. Bos-ton. He Is now the head of one of the large firms which go to make Coventry famous as a center of munitions activity. |
