Governor Alexander Alex-ander lias formally announced hla lnten-iton lnten-iton to retire from public life after the completion of hla present term and authorizes au-thorizes the statement that ho will not bo a candidate for any office at the next general election. It ia the "last word" with the governor. lie is making the statement to clear up any doubts on the matter and to et at rest reports to the effect he might be a candidate for office. The state's chief executive also .believes .be-lieves that it is no inoro than fair that he mako the announcement early, leaving leav-ing the field open to others who may have nHplratlons to become candidates to head the Democratic ticket. Following the statement's appearance It is Ukely that Democratic leaders will start sifting the gubernatorial situation within their ranks for the purpose of finding tho strongest man available. I feel that my life labors politically have ended for the present, at least, and I shall not be a candidate for any office within the gift of tho poopie at the coming election. Proud of Record. Governor Alexander further states that whlje he has been at the head of the ship of state the various Institutions and boards have been placed on a business basis, so far as efficiency is concerned. He declares that the land board has solved manv important land problems also, especially Carey act irrigation projects. State taxes have been lowered, he adds, and such economy practiced that the tax levy for the stgte is the lowest of any other .state In the union. There has been during the past week a noticeable looking up of the stock of Secretary of State Doughertv as a gubernatorial gu-bernatorial possibility. The secretary has Inot 'made a statement, although It is known that he would not decline to enter en-ter the gubernatorial race. His friends have been active in his behalf. They believe that he should be the chotce of the party because they claim he has made an excellent record as secretary sec-retary of state and will draw support from many sources which another candidate candi-date could not. Not a few of the party leaders are giving Secretary Dougherty some deep consideration as a prospective candidate. Bicknell Out of It. This might likewise be said of Attorney Attor-ney 'General Walters, who has many stanch supporters. There is no difference differ-ence . between the two men politically, (TUhpugh both may have a laudable ambition am-bition to be their party's candidate for governor.
