Show AMERICAN TROOPS 10 liP0SITI Artillery Preparation So Effective That No Germans Are Found in Trenches. WITH THE AMERICAN ARMY IN FRANCE, May 4. (By the Associated Press.) American troops in the Lorraine Lor-raine sector yesterday morning carried out a raid on the German lines south of Halloville, on a 600-yard front. After an intense, but brief artillery prepara-. tion, the infantry, accompanied by pioneers, pio-neers, went over the top and penetrated the German positions to the third line. They found not a single German. The attack was on a German salient. The artillery completely leveled the German positions, and the pioneers finished fin-ished the job by blowing up all the enemy works, thus eliminating the salient. A German raid which, it was expected ex-pected would be carried out on the soctor south of Verdun, failed to materialize. ma-terialize. WITH THE FRENCH ARMY IN FRANCE, May 4. Au official note says: On May 3 300 American soldiers, after careful artillery preparation, raided the German lines at Dog's wood, in tho Lorraine sector, penetrating pene-trating through the German's first, second and third lines. The raid constituted the first time that American infantry in this section have operated under the protection of their own artillery. |
