' - I u Grand Army Encampment Closes Deliberations in Salt Lake. . WITH the election of J. C. War-field War-field as commander Utah Department, De-partment, G. A. B., yesterday evening concluded its annual encampment and adjourned. The new department head is a resident of Salt Lake and lias for years been one of the most active and prominent executives execu-tives in local Grand Army cireles. The G. A. B. annual encampment was conducted in the main lodge room of Odd Fellows temple, and in con-junction con-junction tho auxiliary, the Women's Belief corps and ,the Ladies of the Grand Army held annual conventions. Of the former Mrs. Louisa A. Winegar of Salt Lake was elected department president, and Mrs. Eoberta McDonald was chosen to a similarly responsible position with the Ladies of the G. A. B. During the official proceedings of the Grand Army of the Eepublic, resolutions reso-lutions were adopted commending the author of the Beed Smoot pension bill, now pending. This bill, fathered by the senior United States senator fjrom Utah, contemplates a pension of $40 per month for every long-term Civil war soldier, and $30 for each short-term short-term soldier, constituting a substantial increase of pension for the large majority ma-jority of veterans of the Civil war. During a respite which followed the election of officers in all of the bodies, all the members of the Ladies of the G. A. B., each bearing a national banner, ban-ner, made an official visit to G. A. E. post headquarters. The same body held memorial services for their dead before proceeding with the afternoon's business. busi-ness. During the morning session of the G. A. R., General Orlando A. Somers, commander-in-chief of the national department de-partment of the order, rested at his hotel, but was present during the afternoon, after-noon, taking an active part in the installation in-stallation of officers. Lois M. Knauff, national president of the Women 's Relief corps, and Ida M. Tarbox, holding a similar office with the national department, Ladies of the G. A. E were each present at the sessions ses-sions of their orders, being prominent in the inductions to official chairs during dur-ing the evening. At noon yesterday an organ recital programme of an especially appropriate nature was given at the tabernacle, and last nipht the delegates and visiting visit-ing members of the patriotic bodies were the iests of Manager Edward P. Levy at the Orpheum theater. Following the organ recital, dinner was served at encampment headquarters, headquar-ters, served by Bov Scouts of Forest Dale. General Somers, with Mrs. Knauff and Mrs. Tarbox, leaves at noon today for the Pacific coast. They will stop in Oakland for an annual encampment, encamp-ment, and then go to Portland, where they will complete arrangements for the national encampment, August 18. |
