Show FIGHTERS OFTEI TO BUI m FIZZLES j Promoters Not Deserving ! All Censure for Mismatching Mismatch-ing Attractions. NETV YORK, Feb. 17.-Have vou ever stopped to think that inconsistency in the making of boxiirg matches cannot be blamed on the promoters alone? Well, here's our view of it: Whenever a bnUt is staged that proves to be a poor match, and the fans who have shelled out their perfectly eood si-moleons si-moleons at the box office gn awav with a grunge against the club, thev generally hdve their little hammers working overtime over-time for the matchmaker. We'll admit that matchmakers cannot all be periect. if thev were, the number of bouts that are staeed in this man's town or anv other town in a. rear's time would be cut in half, for the said match-em-ups would make, no mismatches. Hut the point we want to make is this It is often the fr.tiH of the fiirhters , themsehes that mismatches are made by the promoters. The fighter who is in demand can usually usual-ly gain some concessions from thf promoter, pro-moter, and he is often permitted to name his opponent anything to eet him to sign up for a match. Realizing that he has the upper hand, n nd willing to put one over by picking a lemon if he can get away with it. the much-sought-after knuckleduster will name somebodv he is confident he can whip. The trouble lies in the fact that the promoters often fail for his bunk, and the public, hoping that the beans will be spilled, shells out the well-known kick to see the battle. Browne Has Fulton. Recently Grant Hugh Browne, the latest lat-est comer in the ranks of fistic promoters, signed up Fred Fulton, the Minnesota giant, for three or four fights, and handed Frederick one thousand cold simoieons for his signature to a contract. This was .iust after Fulton had plastered the ,1a - of Tom Cowler. in Brooklyn, and Freddie's name was being shouted from the hilltops. hill-tops. Then Browne came out with the announcement an-nouncement that Fulton versus Thai-he Weinert or Jim Coffey would he quite thr-thing thr-thing for an opening show at Madison Square Garden. But why Fulton and Weinert. or Fulton Ful-ton and Coffey? What is there about either of tli matches naniM that warrants the boxing fan to spend his monv for a rmtrsidc sea t Whv not Miske. or Dillon, or Frank Mo-ran? Mo-ran?
