Show ORPHEUS CLUB TD DBSERVBIRTHDAY Excellent Reminiscent Programme Pro-gramme Being Arranged for February 27. Memories of the past have been awakened anew among the older members mem-bers of Salt Lake's musio lovers by the announcement of the twenty-fifth anniversary concert of the Orpheus club, which will be given on the night of Tuesday, February 27, in the First Methodist church, Second East and Second Sec-ond South streets. Final plans for the big concert were made at a meeting of officers yesterday. The club has had en unbroken record since its organization organiza-tion in February, 1802, and during that period more than 3u0 men have been identified with the male chorus. Because this year's concert will mark a quarter of a century in the club's life, the programme wifl be reminiscent of past successes. President Alex E. Eberhardt, Director A. H. Peabody and others prominent in the club have selected se-lected several choruses which have pcored big successes in the past, and the singers have been drilling conscientiously conscien-tiously for several months preparing for the event. Tt is realized that there will be many former club members sitting as critics this year, listening to the rendition of numbers which they may feel was well given by them in past vears. For this reason THrector Pca-Vodv Pca-Vodv and his assistant, Professor W. C Ebaugh, have been tireless in their work and the club is rounding into splendid shape as a result. Fred Bennett, one of the charter members of the club, has kept the records rec-ords of the organization for upwards of twenty years and declares that every ev-ery profession, every line of business and almost every trade has been represented repre-sented among the members of the club in the past, lie is certain that every religious denomination could count its members among the Orpheus choruses, and most of them are represented in the sixty or more active members of the club" today. Mr. Bennett has been going over the old records of the club lately for the purpose of learning where the old members mem-bers are now to be found. He aod Director Di-rector Peabody and City Commissioner W. H. Shearman, all three of whom are charter members and have been enthusiasts enthu-siasts for this quarter of a century, have followed most of the club members mem-bers who have gone away from Salt Lake Citv. These three veterans declare that former for-mer Orpheus singers have gone to near-v near-v every large citv in the United States, and several of them to foreign lands. To manv of these a souvenir programme of the 1917 concert will be sent to let them know that the old guard, augmented aug-mented by youths of music of today, are still carrying on the work which was their work and their joy in the past. A programme of unusual interest is being arranged by officers of the Orpheus Or-pheus club for the concert February 27. John D. Spencer, first president of the club and for many years oue of its most enthusiastic supporters, will give a short history of the club's past and its influence upon the music life of Salt Lake through the quarter of a century. Several other novel feats are being planned, and thoTe will be several sev-eral numbers from prominent local talent. tal-ent. An effort is being made to have former members of the club take seats in a body and to sing one of the favorite fa-vorite numbers of past concerts. Rehearsals are being held every Tuesday Tues-day evening in the Consolidated Music hall, and the officers are enthusiastic over the manner in which the old choruses of the past are being sung by the large number of, voices now representing repre-senting the Orpheus club. |
