"The automobile industry haB undergone under-gone a remarkable growth in the past ten years and today is among the leading lead-ing industries of the country," said A. C. Davis, assistant manager of the intermountain in-termountain department of the Northwestern North-western Mutual Fire association. "Along with the development of automobile auto-mobile manufacturing has sprung into existence a new class of insurance, which is now a real necessity not only for the automobilist but for every other individual, "Ten years ago it was looked upon with suspicion by the general public. Today it is the 'rule for everyone to carry accident insurance. Yet this is only one branch of insurance that has been stimulated bv the advent aad growth of the automobile. There are few insurance companies today that do not writ automobile insurance. "The great number of automobiles in use at the present time make it almost imperative that the individual nave a p61icy insuring him against injury from automobiles. Policies providing for damages to property by automobiles, for lawsuits which might' arise as a result of accidents, and for the protection of the owner against fire and theft are in great demand. "Like all other insurance, the rates in the beginning were high, owing to the fact that this form of insurance was a new development and the companies com-panies hail no experience table upon which to base their rates. Most of the companies, however, have written this class of insurance now for the past five years, which has given them an average upon which to base the rate. The result re-sult has been a great reduction in the rates in automobile insurance. "Carefulness in the handling of automobiles au-tomobiles and the endeavor to avoid accidents ac-cidents of all kinds will reduce these rates greatly, as it is a number of claims paid in a certain period of time thnt fixes the rate." Mr. Davis urged the necessity of an "accident prevention day," which he i 6aid would result in the conservation of life and property and would reduce the expense of protection to both. |
