Show SLOT MACHINES IN STORES IN QUESTION Special to The Tribune. OGDEN, Feb. 17. Although slot machines ma-chines of the usual type have been banned in. this city for some time, the police department and sheriff's office are considerably aroused over a new "tntde stimulator" which has made its appearance in more than thirty Ogden stores. The device is a slot machine, pure and simple, according to the officers, offi-cers, but pays a slice of gum when real money is dropped into the slot. When a player wins he receives brass chips with a hole in the middle and there is no nim pay when these are plaved back into the machine. ' With a possible view to confiscating the machines and instituting prosecutions prosecu-tions the officers have sought opinions from the county attorney, city attorney and district attorney as to the law on the point. All these opinions have been unanimous that the machine represents a violation of the law forbidding the operation of a slot machine or other gambling device. Neither the chief of police nor sheriff has stated what ac- : tion will be taken. |
