Show GOVERNMENT ASSAILS STEEL CORPORATION WASHINGTON. Feb. 17. The United States Steel corporation defense to the governmnet's dissolution was assailed today to-day In a lengthy brief by the government in the supreme court. The government charges that the corporation cor-poration was formed not, as contended, as the result of the legitimate development develop-ment of trade, but for the "suppression of competition and the exploitation of the public." The corporation's contention is that it is not a monopoly because it alone cannot dictate prices. The Rovernment declares that the corporation controls the output of more than 50 per cent of production pro-duction in almost every branch of Its activity find has maintained prices, notably not-ably in the case of steel rails, to the extent ex-tent that competitors virtually have followed fol-lowed the prices fixed by the corporation. |
