Show FRENCH TROOPS UNABLE TO RETAKE LOST POSITIONS BERLIN, Feb. 17, by wireless to Sawille. French troops made attacks yesterday on the Aisne. west of Berry-au-Bac, and in the Champagne south of Ripont. Today's official communication communica-tion says these efforts failed. The statement reads: On the Artois front and in the Somme sector, especially on "both sides of the Ancre, the artillery duel reached considerable violence. At several places attacks by British Brit-ish reconnoitering parties were repulsed re-pulsed and south of Miramount a stronger attack, launched after drururire, was repulsed. On the Aisne and west of Berry-au-Bac and in the Champagne, 6outh of Riporft, French advances failed. Our air squadrons extensively bombarded important establishments establish-ments behind the hostile front. On the Somme several ammunition ammuni-tion depots of our adversaries were blown up. The explosions and earth shaking were noted as far away as St. Quentin. |
