Show TO PROTECT OWNERS OF LICENSE PLATES Persons Who Steal Numbers Will Be Prosecuted by State and Local Co-operation. Hereafter, with the co-operation of owners of lost automobile license plates, the local police authorities in the various cities and counties and the secretary of state, persons using license plates to which they are not entitled are to be vigorously prosecuted. This determination was 'reached yesterday upon receipt in the office of Harden Bennion, secretary of state, of a typical typ-ical case of abuse now going on. John Halls, a resident of Huntsville, on January 5 called at the office of the secretary of state and secured license number 797 for his car and immediately im-mediately left for California. Recently a peace officer at the City and County building saw a car bearing this number driven in a dangerous manner, and asked the secretary of state for the owner of the number lu order that prosecution might be had. Investigation proved that the owner of the car was out of the state with the car, and had been for some time. A letter to California reached him at San Diogo, and Mr. Halls explained about the losing of his plato and missing it after he was outside the state limits. Mr. Halls asked whether or not he could secure a new plate, which is permissible per-missible under such conditions, and agreed to appear in the, prosecution of the person who had abused the privilege for which he had paid, at the same time time endangering human life. |
