Show BRAZIL IIS DEEPEST HE HEM! Lowest Level 6100 Feet, With 108 Degrees Rock Temperature. The annual report of the operations of the St. John del Ray gold mine, located in the Minas Geraes mining district of Brazil, Bra-zil, has been recently received by the stockholders, many of whom live in the United States, says the Anaconda Standard. Stand-ard. Interest attaches to this report because be-cause it is at this time the deepest operated oper-ated mine in the world, and is operating under conditions that furnish the most Intense type of deep mining requirements, both as to economy of handling and utility of operation. The St. Jolyi del Ray mine is one of a type of veins that exist in numerous piaces within the bowlder batholite of Montana, and is unique in that it is a comparatively iow-grade property, a small vein and is still mined to a great depth at a very comfortable profit, that of last year amounting to $570,000 from 167,854 tons hoisted, with dividends paid for the year of $326,000. The ore reserves are estimated at 1,200,104 tons. This record was reached in spite of the fact that a great epidemic of Influenza, affecting 75 per cent of the population of the district, was combated during the year. At the mine there were 9.'18 people employed, em-ployed, twenty-eight being Europeans the rest natives. There were five fatal accidents acci-dents at the property during the year. The lowest level is 6100 feet deep from the surface, and the temperature of the rock at this depth while working was 108 degrees, and the air temperature 99 degrees. de-grees. The initial rock temperature at the time of opening new levels was 98 degrees de-grees at the 4100-foot point and 116 degrees de-grees at the 6100-foot point, an increase of mean rock temperature of 17 degrees in 2000 feet last opened. The ventilating system Is elaborate, the sirocco fans being stopped only for 1 hour and 37 minutes during the year. The vein 'is a. tourmaline and vitreous quartz filled fissure of the deep-seated magmatlc type, and the ores will average around $12 to $14 per ton gross value, which is in an auriferous iron-copper-pyrite sulphide, which is concentrated before be-fore treatment. The copper values are largely chal-copyrite chal-copyrite and bornite, and both the pyrite and chalcopyrite carry gold values. The veins are narrow, being only from two to four feet in width, but the ore body is persistent in length and depth and of a generally average value. The treatment works extracted 91.8 per cent of the values. This property has been operated since 1830, aud is largely English owned |
