July 16. Opening plav in the women's singles and reduction of the heavy field in the men's singles to four pairs for sixth-round play tomorrow marked the fifth day of play in the ninth annual clay court tournament. Miss Carrie Car-rie Neely of f'hlrapo. western woman champion, and Miss Corinne Gould of St. Louis, central and central states champion, cham-pion, had no difficulty, Miss Neely advancing ad-vancing throuch the second round. In the fifth round of the men's singles Walter Weshrook of Detroit, western col-pi;ite col-pi;ite champion, managed to defeat Ralph Hurdlck of Chicago. A western doubles titieholder.
