Show GENERAL HINES GIVES TROOP TRAIN FIGURES WASHINGTON, Julv 16. The railroad! of the United States hauled 4.276.94S troops on special and regular trains foi an average of 660 miles each in the firs' six months of 1019, according to statistlct made public today by Director Genera Hines. In addition, probably 2,000,000 officers of-ficers and men made railway trips whilf on furlough, and another million wer transported from camps to their home: , after discharge, making a total of 7,250,00( military passengers accommodated, in addition ad-dition to the usual civilian travel. Th( military traffic in six months requirec 9,000,000 train miles, and, as much of th equipment had to be sent empty in on direction, this figure should be doublet to express the aggregate transportatior demand by the military forces. "This extraordinary demand explains,' the railroad administration's statement says, "why it has not been able to meel all of the requests for excursion trains and why, in some cases, the cars on regular reg-ular passenger trains have been crowded.' |
