Support of the American Red Cross organization in its campaign to care for both the United States soldiers called to the Mexican , .border and for dependents left at home not otherwise provided for is recommended to the people of L'tah by Governor William Spry. Indorsement of the organization was made yesterday by Governor Spry in a formal communication to the people of the state over his signature and the state seal. The recommendation was made as an immediate response to the appeal made to the American people by former President William Howard T'aft, chairman chair-man of' the central committee of the American Red Cross. : Following is the governor's recommendation: recom-mendation: In providing assistance to the medical services of the armed forces of the government by the organization of base hospitals, etc., in purchasing, collecting and dis- ; tributing supplies for our soldiers in the field and in assisting the families of soldiers, increased responsibilities re-sponsibilities have been assumed by the American Red Cross. To Meet Emergency. Anticipating the demands which will be made upon the people of the United States, the Red Cross has been perfecting its organization organiza-tion to meet every possible emergency, emer-gency, and its ofiicers appeal to the people of the United States for their co-operation to enable the society so-ciety to adequately help our sick and wounded soldiers, to soften the harshness of field service and to meet urgent needs among dependents depend-ents at home. Now, therefore, I commend to the people of Utah, in the present emergency, the American Red Cross, aud recommend that in their patriotic responses to the calls which may be made for the alleviation allevia-tion of sickness, hunger and want, they avail themselves of this organization. or-ganization. Contributions may be made at Salt Lake City, Utah, to John C. Cutler, treasurer local chapter, or at the local headquarters, 120 East First South, and in turn these contributions con-tributions will be. forwarded to the national treasurer through State Red Cross Treasurer W. H. Walker. Taft Sends Appeal. Following is a copy of the appeal sent out by Mr. Taft as chairman of the central committee of the American Red Cross: With the calling of many thousand thou-sand men into military service, new and heavy responsibilities fall upon the Red Cross in its relation to the army and navy on the one hand and to the people of the United States on the other. At present these responsibilities are, first t to provide assistance to the medical services of the armed forces of the government by the organization of base hospitals, ambulance am-bulance columns and other units for the care of our sick and wounded; second, to purchase, collect, forward for-ward and distribute supplies for our soldiers in field, camp and hospital; hos-pital; third, to help soldiers' families fami-lies left destitute and not provided for by other agencies. For the necessary means to discharge dis-charge this patriotic service the Red Cross,, in accordance with its custom, tuns to the public, whoso sympathy and generosity it has learned Implicitly to trust. Upon the response to this appeal must depend de-pend the adequacy with which the I Red Cross will be enabled to help our sick and wounded soldiers, to soften the harshness of field service, serv-ice, and to meet urgent needs among dependents at home. In anticipation of 6uch a grave emergency as this the Red Cross has been building up an organization organiza-tion competent to meet the obligations obli-gations of its national charter and to make effective the generosity of a patriotic people. Contributions may be sent to tho treasurer of a local chapter, or checks may be made payable to the American "Red Cross and sent to national headquarters in Washington. |
