Show ALLIES CAPTURE SALIENT French Troops Deliver an Assault in Conjunction Conjunc-tion x With the British Army and in Thirty-five Thirty-five Minutes Are in Possession of the Desired De-sired Objects. TEUTONS SUFFER HEAVY LOSSES Berlin Reports Failure of the Allied Attacks on Both Sides of the Somme and Declares Repeated Advances Were Hurled Back, LONDON, July 9, 2:49 a. m. British InfantryJ after a fierce bom- . bailment, stormed a line of trenches and gained a footing in the Bois de Trones, according to the British official statement issued late last night. An appreciable advance also was made in tho neighborhood of Ovillers. (Special Cable by Arrangement with London Dallj Telegraph and International News Service.) LONDON, July 8. The French and British attacked simultaneously today and wiped out, within thirty-five minutes, min-utes, a strong German salient which had jutted dangerously into their new line north of Somme. By their concerted attack they have carried their front to and beyond the village of Hardecourt on the Bapaume highroad, three and a half miles southeast south-east of Combles, an important German provisioning center. They have straightened straight-ened out their front until now they hold a line which curves but slightly from Montaubon to Curlu and Buscourt, precluding pre-cluding flanking attacks by the Germans Ger-mans on what has been the northern flank of the Buscourt salient. The attack was carried out under the most difficult conditions of Terrain and in the face of determined German resistance. re-sistance. The allies also carried a small hill north of Hardecourt. The heavy rains of the last few days have converted con-verted the battlefield into almost a bog and the treacherous ground is an added handicap to the infantry and an almost insurmountable difficulty for the artillery, artil-lery, especially the heavier batteries. Allied Losses Heavy. Hardecourt is approximately six and a half miles due east of Albert, which was slightly behind the old British front. Its capturo makes a gain of between four and a half and five miles for the allies in the first week of their offensive on this part of the front. The advance has not been purchased cheaply, however, according to information informa-tion from Berlin. The German war office of-fice today officially declares the British Brit-ish losses "enormous," and the French no smaller. The English suffered especially espe-cially severely in the hard fighting before be-fore Ovillers and Contalmaison on Friday. Fri-day. See Silver Lining. "The enormou number of fallen Englishmen Eng-lishmen before the Oviilers-Contalmai-son-Brazentin-Legrend sector and of fallen Frenchmen before the Biaches-Soyecourt Biaches-Soyecourt front give an indication of the masses of enemy forces employed for the attacks and of the devastating effect of our artillery, machine gun and rifle fire," says the Berlin statement. The allied looses, unofficial news from Germany indicates, already have mouut-ed mouut-ed far into the thousands. The French soil bought back with this blood, German Ger-man military experts declare, is a mere drop in the bucket to that still under the feet of the Germans. The successful drive at Hardecourt was the only action of importance on the Picardy front today. Two German counter-attacks against the new allied positions were broken up, Paris reports, while south of the Somme no important incident occurred. The French late last evening added to the number of prison- (Continucd on Page Two,) ADVANCE OF THE !
