The heirs of Jaures have been offered 5100,000 by the government for the writings writ-ings and letters left by the murdered leader. The papers are in Switzerland and will remain there until un-til the proper time for their publication comes. There is no doubt that the scandal will cause a colossal sensation throughout the world. One of the men who knew every 'detail of the case is Clemenceau. About a year ago M. Lepine, the prefect of the i Paris police, resigned suddenly. No reason rea-son was given for his step, but in well-informed well-informed circles it was an open secret that the famous police official, in his investigation in-vestigation of the murder of Jaures, had obtained evidence against a certain personage per-sonage who occupies a very high and influential in-fluential position. He communicated his discovery to his friend, Clemenceau who undoubtedly will make good use of it If he can further hla political ends by doing do-ing so. Recently a high French police official, who was accompanied by several detectives, detect-ives, visited the heirs of Jaures and demanded de-manded all papers left by the great Socialist So-cialist In the name of the attorney general. gen-eral. The heirs wanted to" see the order of the nnhlic nrnsnlftr hnf tVia nnllx official declared that he had left It at hiB office. He went away and returned about an hour later with an order of search and confiscation, signed not by the attorney general, but by the chloT of the political police. He did not, get the papers pa-pers because they are no longer in France. One of the manuscripts the French government gov-ernment wants to get into its hands Is a letter sent by Jaures to the Belgian Socialist So-cialist leader, Vandervelde. This letter, in which Jaures declared his intention to prevent war, was written on July 30, 1314, and two days later the great Socialist So-cialist was a dead man. It follows: "The present crisis will pass away as soon as the French government declares It cannot see any danger fo Russia in the Serbian affair," Jaures wrote to his Belgian friend. "France has the power to prevent the war, but certain political cliques cannot permit our peoples to take the part of Russia. Our nations must not be compelled to shed their blood In order that the knout regime of the 'White Czar' may be strengthened. We cannot help Asia to devour Europe. "It is our duty to fight the war craze in Beleium. You know very well what the war would mean to your country. The Belgian Interests can only be safeguarded by peace and your people must not let themselves bo pushed Into a war, no matter mat-ter how alluring the promises made to them may be. "In France malicious powers are working work-ing for war. We are to be driven into a terrible carnage to satisfy an unhealthy ambition and because the stock exchanges ex-changes of London, Paris and St. Petersburg Peters-burg have speculated.' In another letter Jaures wrote: "I know positively that I am to be shot as soon as the mobilization begins. That is a part of the war programme of Del-casse." |
