Show contracted tor. UNITED STATES SURGEONS REACH INFECTED CITY By International News Service. NEW YORK. July 8. The memof the United States public health service cool, capable, confident rode Into town today from Washington to throw themselves into the city's struggle against infantile paraJvsis. Headed bv Assistant Surgeon General William Colby Rucker, the group of government gov-ernment experts went over the situation this afternoon with Health Commissioner Haven Emerson and his aides. They examined ex-amined the figures, which showed eighteen eight-een deaths today and ninety-five verified cases. Dr. TCmerson told them that his hospital hos-pital facilities in Brooklyn were crowded, but that he had offers of acaistsace from more than a dozen hospital in the greater city. "We welcome your aid," the commissioner commis-sioner told the men who have risked death righting contagious diseases all over the country. "We want you to work here with us. si'de by side, until we have beaten beat-en this epidemic." Those who conferred with the commissioner commis-sioner were Surgeon C. H. Lavinder. Passed Assistant Surgeons J. P. Leake and Joseph Wilson and Dr. Rucker. No Reason for Panic. "There is no reason for panic in this city," declared Dr. Rucker. "The Per--centaee of cases and deaths among New York's children is a very small fraction of 1 per cent. This battle can be fought and won. and it's going to be won by your efficient health department and its assistants. "Dr. Lavlnder will be In charge of our local work. We expect to begin work Monday, when we will be joined by two of our men from Savannah, Ga., Passed Assistant Surgeons Edward 1-Yancls and Joseph r. Ridlon. "I expect to return to Washington tonight to-night to receive reports of cases In other states. I have alarming newspaper reports re-ports of outbreaks in a dozen or more states, but we have no official medical corroboration of this." Surgeon More Hopeful. Discussing the general situation. Dr. Emerson was palpably more hopeful. "We are now getting more cases of Immediate orltrin," he declared. "I won't say the epidemic can be checked, but nevertheless the increase of a few days ago has not been maintained." Both Commissioner Kmerson and Assistant As-sistant Surgeon General Rucker dented that there is any possibility of a general quarantine being put into effect In New-York. New-York. Stringent orders, however, may be adopted to prevent carriers of the disease dis-ease leaving the city. Another point believed be-lieved to have been discussed at today's conference was the question of disinfecting disinfect-ing all railroad cars that are used in Interstate traffic.
