Show FRENCH TROOPS ADVANCE FURTHER ON SOMME FRONT PARIS, July 8, 12:30 p. m. The ! French made a further advance last 1 night on the Somme front in the , vicinity of Belloy-en-SaDterre and Es-trees, Es-trees, the war office anuounced today. The gains as a whole in this sector , were not large, operations being- hin-1 dered by bad weather. Seyeral hundred hun-dred Germans were captured. On the Verdun front there were violent, vio-lent, artillery engagements, particularly in the districts of hill 304, Esues and Souvilie. The statement says: Bad weather hindered the operations oper-ations on the Somme front yesterday yester-day afternoon and last night. A surprise attack delivered by the French yesterday- evening iu the vicinity of Belloy-en-Santerre was in all respects successful. We captured cap-tured 350 prisoners. East of Es-trecs Es-trecs our troops made progress with hand grenades in tho communicating communi-cating trenches of the enemy; nfty prisoners were taken bv us. North of Lassigny a deta'.'hment of the enemy which was endeavoring endeavor-ing to occupy one of our minor posts was dispersed by infantry fire. . North of "Verdun there has been violent artillery fighting particularly particu-larly in the sectors of hill 304, KunVs, Souville and at the Damloup batterv. There were, however, no iufantrv engagements. In Lorraine we cloaned up with baud grenades a German post near Besange and brought bark a few prisoners. |
