| Show wILL CAUCUS FRIDAY Republican Members of New Council to Hold Meeting WILL DECIDE ON PRESIDENT Candidates Now i Sight Are Davis Thomas Cofctrell and Hewlett Call for Caucus Issued Yesterday by Robertson Hewlett and CottreJl Opposition 1 Holding Caucus Overcome and Decision Organize Before First Council Meeting Is Beached I The Republican memberselect of the Council that Is i to conduct the business oC the city for the next two years will hold 1 caucus at the Wells Fargo Co bank on Friday evening beginning at 8 oclock for the purpose oC selectIng select-Ing a president for the Council and for making such chancres In the rules and olllcors of the CAUCUS as are thought best The call for the caucus was Issued yesterday and was signed by Councilmen Robertson Hewlett and Cottrell There will be eleven members In the caucus three from the First precinct three from the Second two from the Fourth and three from the Fifth Ot these J J Thomas and F J Hewlett i of the First Charles Cottrell of the Second and A A Robertson and A J i Davis of the Fifth were reelected The new men are Arthur Robinson of the First E J Eardley and W E Arljjus of the Second AV C Spence and J N Sharp of the Fourth and J S Daveler of the Fifth I The chief Interest inthe caucus centers cen-ters 1 the selection of a President for the Council and all kinds l of stories have been floating about for days In regard to wirepulling and scheming said to be goIng on In behalf of one candidate or another for this position The candidates So far as known for President arc A J Davis J J Thomas Charles Cottrell and F J Hewlett Of these only Davis and Thomas have made active canvasses for the honor and this has been done through their friends largely The caucus can adopt any rules that It chooses the natural supposition is that a simple majority of those present pres-ent will decide who the new President will bfe Of course In the Council It will require eight votes to elect but every Republican member will be expected ex-pected to abide by the decision of the caucus A right lively caucus Is looked for but it wns decided to admit morn bets of the press and have everything open and above board Some were in Cavor pf dispensing with the caucus al together and electing a President at the first meeting of time Council others argued ar-gued that as the Republicans had a majority of the members they would be held responsible for the conduct of the city affairs and that a caucus should be held for the purpose of or ganising The latter argument pre vailed |
