Show PROF J J MGLELLAN I i I 1 7 q U itt c t r T 1 r tf4 w wvq W4 r 0 F lie CLELt 1 f i Prof J J McClellan the wellknown and popular organist at the Tabernacle Taber-nacle began the study of music at the age of 10 years In Payson his birthplace with a local teacher and was organist the Mormon church there at the ago of li In July 1891 he went to Saginaw Mich where he studied under Albert W Platte and acted as the latters assistant as organist of St Pauls church For two and a half years he studied at the Ann Arbor conservatory wlfti Alberto Jonas the eminent Spanish pianist and Dr A A Stanley the organist During his star he was made choirmaster choir-master and organist oC St Thomaas Catholic church During his stay at Ann Arbor he founded the University Univer-sity of Michigan symphony orchestra Prof McClellan returned to Utah In July 1S9C and in September he opened his studio Ho was director of music In the L D S college for two ears and the year following spent half of III I > p I I T J his time In charge of musical affairs at the Brigham Young academy Provo In August 1S99 Mr and Mrs McClcl Ian made an extended trip to Europe and while there Prof McClellan studied under Xavcr Scharwenka and Ernst Jedllczka Berlin Upon returning to Utah after avery a-very profitable study abroad Mr Mc Clellan was tendered the chair of music mu-sic at the State University and made organist at the Tabernacle SceVig the limitations of tho old Tabernacle organ or-gan he set about soon after his assignment as-signment as organist to Interest the church authorities to remodel the old instrument Unaided he accomplished his aims when on December 31 1IOO the authorities of the Mormon church decided to spend 12000 on the famous organ and today we have In the Tabernacle Tab-ernacle the most perfect and grandest organ on earth Mr McClellan Is doing somo composIng compos-Ing teaches a large class of private pupils and shows off the wonders of the Tabernacle organ to thousands of tourists annually |
