Show TilE STATE PRISONs The Utah State prison Is located on a ISOaero reservation Immediately southeast of this city and at the < terminus ter-minus of the Consolidated Railway and Power companys line The cultivation of a largo part of this reservation by convicts Is still proving a marked factor fac-tor In the economy of the Institution and some very excellent work Is done In the 1 way of agilcultural operations The vrlson j buildings covering nearly an aero are < of brick and atone Iron and steel l There arc In the two cell buildings 1 214 cells of steel placed three tiers high and HUed with combination levers to fasten the cell doors at a single sin-gle operation by means of a lover In the guards room lit each end of each tier The cells arc largo enough for two but are occupied only by one prisoner pris-oner Four cells are for women LEGISLATIVE APPROPRIATIONS I I TlTo Legislature made appropriations for new buildings and Improvements ns follows Electric plant and building various needed Improvements IMPROVEMENTS DURING 1901 The new gateway for teams has been completed and Is a decided Improvement Improve-ment while the old gateway has been remodeled and IH now used for visitors entrance A brick building for trusty houpo has nlffO been completocl on the outside In the front yard The blacksmith black-smith Hhop and soap factory Inside tho wdh has also been completed during fho your which hag l leapt a large number num-ber of convicts at work PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS The large proposed new addition to tho administration building will bg commenced early this coming spring and will be a great Improvement to lit nppenruncc of the front yard ua well as giving tho prison officials more room and a great many other conveniences Then Avlll be R room also In this build ing for the monthly meetings of the prison board and a large wnllln room for visitors which hoe heretofore been greatly needed ELECTRIC LIGHTING While the Legislature appropriated n Bum for the PRISONERS KEPT BUSY The prisoners are all kept busy In the different duties connected with the work of tho Institution on buildings In the workshops yards farm work ate In the workshops we find prisoners busy making shoes clothing cinches cotton socks brushes etc which greatly great-ly reduce the cost of maintenance Clothing and shoes are made by the prisoners for tho male Inmates of the State Insane asylum SALES OF PRODUCTS During the year of 1901 Warden Dow sold nearly SOOO dozen pairs cotton socks In fact he could not fill all or ders received This has been the same with cinches large numbers having been sold Brushes also are being sold about as fast as can be turned out by this department IRRIGATION On account of the scarcity of water during the summer months for Irriga tion the crops on the prison farm fell off greatly Owing to this a large quan tity of vegetables had to be purchased Steps however are being taken to overcome this difficulty this season If possible NUMBER OF PRISONERS There are at present 149 prisoners confined within the walls one being a female Of these there arc eight life prisnoers three sentenced to death and one on a charge of murder In the first degree There were received 101 and discharged 117 during the year or those discharged 71 had served their time 21 released on habeas corpus pio ceedlngs 10 were pardoned 3 paroled 1 death 3 committed to asylum I for new trials and 1 sentence commuted The cost per capita will be about 40 cents a day PAID VISITORS During the year Just closed there were J itS paid admissions to the prison which ut 15 until May < J nOl the prison was under quarantine a case of smallpox having occurred among the Inmates but since the last named date the health of the prisoners has been I exceptionally good One death
