camp for the 1 Year presents tho Consolidated Mer curs property In a very favorable light 4 notwithstanding a general lack of Interest 4 In-terest In tho district during the past 4 few yearn The Con Mercur Is one of 4 Utahs most famous properties and Is I the maInstay of tho Mercur camp The K record shows the ore to have averaged 2 up very well 03 compared with other 7 years The average la slightly lower lnd the tonnage shows a falling oft dur I Ung the past few months The production produc-tion for the year amounts to almost I t V 1J7G000 or nearly 74000 ounces of fine + sold The tonnage for the year with the month of December estimated is i placed at 280000 tonsc An extraction of about 5527 per ton Is thus shown to I Ijhovo been made which Is about GO cents I < per ton less than that recorded late lat-e I year During the year tho tailings have av i 1 4 I eraged 103 per ton This added to the amount extracted from each ton of ore shows the value of the ore to be 030 j per ton Notwithstanding the fact that a cut was made In the tonnage during the year the mine Is I In good condition and looks as If It will continue to pay dividends divi-dends fqr a considerable length of time The cut In the tonnage was made neces cary by the shrinkage In the quantity of oxidized ore In sight The company has any amount of base ore in the mine but as tho roaster capacity Is limited it IB Impossible to keep up the daily average av-erage by using more base ore when the supply of oxidized ore Is from any cause unavailable The supply of oxidized ore continues to be quite low but It will probably be offset by the Important development of mixed ore on the Viking level of the Golden Gale The company is also making ma-king some chahgca In the roasting furnaces fur-naces by which It expects shortly to handle COO tons of base ore per day Instead In-stead of a little over 400 tons as at present pres-ent During the year the company started up the old Mercur companys mill at Manning on the old tailings dump of the Mercur mine In June when the start was made and for some time thereafter the results were not entirely satisfactory but a much better saving has been made of late About 60000 tons of tailings were passed through tho old mill up to December 1st from which an extraction of 95 cents a ton has been made The coat of operating Is placed la 55 cents a ton which leaves a profit of 40 cents a ton or 24000 Of late the results have been much better an extraction ex-traction of 130 per ton not being uncommon un-common The work Is going along steadilY and It looks as If tho step will add more than 100000 to the companys treasury On February 1st of the present year the company started up Its power plant which is modern and up to date < < In every particular It Is equipped with a battery bat-tery of six large boilers and two powerful power-ful engines which operate two electric generators The current hUB generated Is conveyed to the various motors of tho mill and mine and Is made to drive all the machinery In the companys property It is said to be more reliable than the power before received from outside sources The company spends from 1000 to 3500 per month In dead trok By this Is meant the runJET of drifts crosscuts cross-cuts raises etc to discover new ore bodloH and explore virgin ground The results of this dead work have been very gratifying during the year 1901 Mention has already been made of the discovery of mixed ore on the Viking Jevj1 l of the Golden Gate More import anif perhaps than this discovery Is the development of a fine chute of ore In tho Lulu workings of tho old Mercur property Before this year the 100 feet I I 1 II J 6JV > I VvT r T > p 4 i t i convlncw r jarly evert ry iti the oru i JdL can a and 1 gc4 jf the l workings comparatively part of the Mercur was unknown Doubts were felt as to its 1 orebearing qualities During the pres been demonstrated that ent year It has this stretch of ground Is all orebearing Incline No 27 has been sunk on the dip 200 feet and a fine of the vein nearly chute of oxidized ore carrying from has been exposed for 4 to 10 per ton the entire distance Levels are being have opened from the Vein which The proved to be largo and continuous Is northwesterly Work Incline heads also being pushed In the Lulu Incline which was started 240 feet from incline No 27 This incline heads due north thta being the dip of the vein IL Is now down 350 feet In good ore all the way Six levelB have been run from different places In the Incline and a great deal of ore has been developed much of which Is oxidized the rent being base Assays chow values ranging from 6 to 40 per tonThe company has paid out the sum of 176000 for labor during the year An average of 520 men arc employed In the mlnes and mills of the company and the rate of wages Is S2 59 per day BIG CONSOLIDATION The biggest thing In the history of fercur during the year 1001 was the consolidation of tho Mcrcur and Golden Gate properties The deal was accomplished accom-plished In Europe by Mr John Dern and Cnpt t De La Mar The combine has had the bost possible results from a practical standpoint for both mines One million shares make up the total of stock In the consolidation Of this onethird went to the Mercur stockholders stock-holders the balance being held by Capt De La Mar The old Mcrcur company had only 200000 shares of stock so when the each new arrangement was completed stockholder was given one and two thirds Hharea In the now company for every one of the old Tho value of the stock on the market baa been Oar hanced rather than decreased Since the combine dqvelopment work pushed dn both the Golden man bean Mercur The result has the Gate and of vast bodies of been the exposure that Insure radeores ado and highgrade lowgrade sure the successful operation of the big mill for years Ito come NEW TRAMWAY Among the < Improvements made was a tramway connecting the Mcrcur mine with the Golden Gate mill This tramway I tram-way Is 2500 feet long A connection has I been mad with the Resolute tunnel at n station level with the terminus oC the the tram some eighty feet down hill In order to make this connection It became necessary to sink three used for wInes At present these are ore chutes tho different grades of ore being dumped Into them from tho Resolute Res-olute tunnel connecting with every working of the mine From there the ore Is token on tram cars to bins on the Sawmill tunnel of the Golden Gate whence they arc hoisted to the mill The Golden Gate mill or as It I Is known now the Consolidated Mercur mill Is I undoubtedly the most complete as well as the largest establishment of Its character In existence The processes pro-cesses through which the ore goes are practically ihpsamo as at other like mills but ona much larger scale It is estimated that tho loss In gold by the Consolidated Mercur leaching Is less than 5 cents ppr ton The mill has a capacity of 1100 tons of ore per day and bullion at the rate of nearly 52 000000 per year can bo turned out Superintendent Edwards says he has ore In sight In the Mercur alone of the value of over 500000 The Golden Gate propertiesare being held In reserve re-serve and the present indications are that they will not have l to be drawn on for a long time All things considered the owners of the Consolidated Mercur feel that they may be sure of velvet to a far greater extent than the present pres-ent value of their stock THE SACRAMENTO But though tar and tiway the lender of all the Mercur properties the Consolidated Con-solidated Mercur is not the only valuable valu-able mine in the district The Sacra monto In past years haj tnllaillI1CJ11 some dividends and although has not been In the distributive class for aoraa thing like sixteen months the time fj coming Its owners believe when it will resume its old rank among the dlvl dendpayers During the time that the cash payments on Block have been held up the mine has more than paid expenses ex-penses The roaster plant Is 170 feet long and Inclosed In wooden building Its net cost Is In the neighborhood of J20000 It IH of the JackHng design and is the same as those now In operation In the Golden Gate mill In the spring of 1901 the fires were lighted and from then on It was easy smooth sailing for the company THE OVERLAND Another prominent Mercur mine la I tho Overland In the Sunshine district Miners generally are aware of the fact that the ores of the Sunshine district lower values than those of Mar carry tho It has been demonstrated to satisfaction cur of capable men that 1t la Impossible to work ithem at a profit In the same manner as the Mcrcur ores sses which arc be However new processes ing put Into operation have encouraged the Overland people to believe that they can make a good thing out of their mine no So confident were they during 1900 I of their they Increased the capacity All mill from 200 to 500 tons per day complete the changes are practically and in 1901 the wheels were turning Tho ore Is hoisted from the mine In two skips that dump automatically balance each other Each has a and fa capacity of 4000 pounds The ore dumped from them into a crusher No 5 and elevated to bins at the top of aut the tho mill Thence It goes through other crushers until it Is reduced to a pulp From the pulp a belt conveyof feeds the product Into any of the leach de Ing Links that the operator may sire to fill The mill improvements however have not been made without careful knowledge of the prospect of securing se-curing sufficient ore to keep It In con tlnuous operation for a length of tlm I oufllclent to JustKy Its eraotiwt j |
