| Show I OITY POLICE DFJPABTJIENT 1 The police have found the past year less eventful In crimes than for many years pant Up to December 1st there had not been a single arrest for murder while there were seven arrests on that charge last year llowevei since December De-cember 1st there havo been two arrests ar-rests from which murder charges havo developed vl Roy Kaighn who shot W S Haynes and Peter Mortensen who is I thought to have committed the coldblooded murder of James R Play However considerable activity has been required by the police in dealing with minor offenders There have been 2243 arrests 789 were for drunkenness 158 for vagrancy 18 for burglary S for housebreaking and 12 for grand larceny lar-ceny No changes have been made in the personnel of the force with the exception excep-tion of the temporary appointment of J D Brown to act as mounted officer cer The expenses for the year have been much heavier for the reason that It WaG necessary to employ a large force extra men to serve during the Merchants and the Elks street carnivals carni-vals The department was able to preserve pre-serve perfect order at all times and it has received many compliments for the manner in which It cared for tho many petty thieves who wero in the city during the days of festivity The expenses of the department up to and including December 1st were General expenses 2100 a compared with 1500 for last year payrolls 35 09560 as against 33700 for last year total expenses 3749560 as against 35200 for 1900 Tho fines and forfeitures for-feitures amount to S1550 a compared with 1661990 for last year The number of different offenses for which arrests Tvcre nrado Is 76 Among the offenders 9t different occupations are represented and 24 different nationalities tionalities The detective work of the department depart-ment remains in charge of Georgo Sheets aided by Duty Sergts Ed Jan ney Peter C Brown and John Bur bIdge Chief Hlllon remains at the head of tho department Tho police force as now constituted Is composed as follows One Chief ono detective three duty sergeants three desk sergeants two patrol drI vors three mounted officers two prisoners pris-oners guards one Jailer one matron and twenty patrolmen making a total to-tal of thirtyseven |
