| Show THE RAILROADS As will be seen by reading the nn ual review of the railroads found elsewhere In this Impression the year 1901 was filled with interesting and important moves While the mileage oC Utah was Increased by compara Ivcly little new track yet several hun dr added to the lines directly dred miles were Jnc rectly tributary to Salt Lake lines vfilch will increase the citys jobbing trade and eventually develop into other great roads passing through the State The Los Angeles connection of both the San Pedro and Short Line got well under way branches were built and permanent way of local roads strengthened strength-ened and Improved The cross earnings of the two roads Rio Grande Western and Short Line amounted to 15000000 to say nothing of the proportion to be credited to Utah out of the immense earnings of the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific Pa-cific S cificThis year it ia I confidently expected many miles will be completed on the Los Angeles lines and the work of Improving existing trackage will bp continued Something definite Is also looked for In regard to the Southern Pacific cutoff and tho entrance of that road and the Union Pacific to Salt Lake while tho air is filled with rumors ru-mors of short extensions of local branches any one of which would prove of the greatest Importance to the State The annual reports showed Increases and Improvements and this year ought to show a still greater advance I S vance The railroads aro doing a great work too in telling the world of the attractions attrac-tions and resources of Utah and Idaho and the intermountain country generally gen-erally and for the current year this will be continued with the expectation on the part of officials that a large immigration im-migration will result Railroads are the great means whereby the development of the country coun-try can be fostered and pushed I always good to see more tracklay ing and when the railroads prosper the countr from which they draw their revenue is sure to be thriving and its people doing well |
