City Jobbers and wholesale whole-sale dealers have enjoyed highly satisfactory sat-isfactory and prosperous year From the best information obtainable te at this date It Is thOught that n conservative con-servative estlmaite of the Increase in tho volume ofJobbing business o n whole over last year l be in the neighborhood of 15 to 20 per cent In some lines of trade the increase will ru a high a 30 per cent or more but in others will not exceed 5 to 10 per cent and in l few lines tho volume vol-ume of trade owing t conditions affecting af-fecting those particular lines may scarcely reach or many even fall slightly slight-ly below last years figures In general however conditions nave been quite healthy throughout the erond notwithstanding some few untoward features principal of which are tho heavy slump In the values of mining shares the Inter part of the year ithe comparatively low price received re-ceived for their product by the wool growers and the short wheat crop the situation on and have gone farther afield for business busi-ness and the remarkable growth and development in Idaho and the heavy Immigration tharoto has further Increased In-creased the outlet for the goods of Salt Lake merchants and should prove 3 fe to field of operation for our houses In the future J Tho greatest increase In any line of industry ota commercial and manufacturing manu-facturing nature for tho year has doubtless been in tho production of beet sugur All of trho factories have not completed their run but careful estimates show the years output at 30 600000 pounds an Increase of 13600000 or almost SOpe cent This is from Lhreo factories of ono of which this Is the first season Notwithstanding the strong competition of the sugar trust she Industry Js in a prosperous and flourishing condition and arrangements are being made for 3 greatly Increased acreage of beets and another new factory fac-tory and refinery is contemplated for next yearn the Bear rjver district The product this year ha found market In the following States Utah Idaho Wypmlng Montana Tvansas WyqmlnGMontana ansa Nebraska Missouri and Iowa and It Is expected that neXt season Mississippi river points and Chicago will be reached from this market Canners and packers of fruit have had a long and very satisfactory season sea-son and the product netted good prices Tho output Is 160000 cases mainly of tomatoes tomntewlthcnslderablo of peaches pears apples plums string beans peas etc Two new canneries operated this season and three others arc contemplated for next year Woolen factories have run constantly and over time and were unable to keep up with their orders even with the increased in-creased output Hardware and mining supplies show quite a handsome gain for the year Clothing trade was lively and cosily held Its own us compared with last year notwithstanding the backward season this fall Boots and shoes suffered eomo from the open season and will about equal last year 11 volume Drug trade was active and shows a healthy growth Dry goods business about held its own with some gain in notions The lumber and building trades have been quite active and show a laS Increase In-crease Furniture trade has heen quite good and shows a healthy growth and tone The gain was n little over 16 per cent Retail trade throughout State ha been on the whole good for tho year and the demand Is for more expensive and a better class of goods generally Mercantile collections generally throughout he State have been fairly Good on the whole though In some sections sec-tions where crop failures occurred merchants mer-chants have felt the pressure of the times and have required sonic accommodations accom-modations In banking circles the year has been satisfactory and throughout the year deposits have held up well and money has been In good supply While bank ers generally have pursued conserva tie policy and closely scanned credits and collaterals no dimcully credis perienced securing accommodations when the security was satisfactory Bank clearings fOr the year have shown 1 remarkable increase over 1900 of 01770976 This Is owing largely to the heavy business in buslnes mining
