Show THE BRANCH NORMAL The branch normal school in southern south-ern Utah Is no longer an experiment From its establishment In 1897 It hns grown quietly and steadily to be a fixture among the educational institutions insti-tutions of our State Aa its name Implies It is a part of the State normal school At present it offers tile first three years of the four years normal course It also provides pro-vides a preparatory course to accommodate accom-modate students over 18 years of age and not prepared for the high schoolwork school-work On completion of the course given at tho branch students may enter en-ter the fourthyear classes at the University Uni-versity fully accredited and by doing the work successfully be graduated with a normal certificate in one year This arrangement has many commendable com-mendable features Through1 the establishment es-tablishment of the normal school the people of a large but isolated section of our State have placed within easy reach the boon of higher education which advantage could hardly have been possible except through the help of the State At far less expense the young people of southern Utah may do the preparatory work for college just as efficiently as by going hundreds oC miles away from home Indeed this fact has been sufficiently sufficient-ly I demonstrated by the graduates that entered the University from the branch normal last year Side by side with students of like grade from almost every other higher Institution In the State they all vent on to successful graduation Those six students have now gone back to their homes and aro filling positions from which they can disseminate their light and culture five having become teachers one Is editing a newspaper At the University another an-other class from the branch has taken their place Southern Utah heretofore has been sadly destitute of facilities for education but railroad and tion Without a sparsely settled It was generally next to Impossible to have even the common schools what they should be The normal nor-mal school Is supplying what is most needed well trained teachers It is creating a sentiment for higher educa too by affording a lion in other lines training In otn chance for fundamental professions Besides a general good result comes In a healthful stimulating and broadening of the whole section The liberality of the Legislatures has to equip the enabled the Regents branch normal most completely And the furnishings have the advantage of being entirely hew and modern inc selection too has been made with a needs of view of meeting tilt Peculiar the students that come The librarY l for instancecontalns besides the stand elementary books as ard works such prepare the student for a further study of literature and create A love for employment of teachers reading In th3 Regents have been very ers too the successful in securing those of the highest grade Tile present force consists con-sists of N T Porter principal George W Decker Instructor In the science in Tlpton Instructor department J II manual training and physics 11 Claude Lewis who has charge of the classes In mathematics Mr Cathcnit Instructor In English Miss Annie K cul Spencer reading art and Physical In Thomas assistant ture Miss Blanch reading and English a special Instructor Mr 05 also employed tor In muelc is I car C Anderson The enrollment this year is reported very satisfactory Iron and Washing ton counties have been most active In supporting the Institution most probably prob-ably because of Its situation Students have also conic from Kane Garfield Beaver county is ami Plute counties evidently sleeping on her privileges H Is not likely however that any large part of the section can long re iimlf appreciative of the generosity of tie state toward southern Utah es peclilly Mhlle tb good work of tire bran ih normal goes on Wo look rather rath-er fc r such loyal support of the school as v Iill make it grow to be a might force in the upbuilding of our flavored Statik |
