amply sufficient to relate of the rapid Growth and achieved popularity ot the famous ChrJatenaen orchestra which Is undoubtedly un-doubtedly the leading organization of I its kind In Salt Lake City Success has crowned Its overy effort ef-fort from its foundation In BrIgham City In 1SS5 since which time it has won for Itself a name and reputation that from a musical and art standpoint Is excelled by none In the West When first established the orchestra was composed ol four Chrlstpnson brothers Mose LP Chris and Pied and E W Nichols The history of the orchestra has been a continuous success In 1890 the ChriBtensens removed to Ogden where they created furore by their splendid playing and gentlemanly conduct They remained in Ogdcn four years after which they removed to this city Here they scored an Immense success from the day of their arrIval until jet present pres-ent they have the largest and best orchestra or-chestra in this part of the West The regular organization numbers ten pieces and it can be doubled at short notice It can truthfully be stated that the Christensen orchestra < has revolution iz5d mailers in Its field to such an extent ex-tent that today no ball or reception of any magnificence la complete without Its presence It was the first orchestra to Introduce standard classic music for waltzes and one of the foremost factors In Its success has been the foremost Institutions of its kind In the West In the academys spacious and elegant ballroom nearly all of the popular and swell functions are given during the winter season Societys soirees and social Christensen brothers ore graduates of the best dancing academics America and their methods are those adopted by the leading masters of Europe and this country More than 300 pupils are on the musi-cians la the city Messrs G E Skel ton A Masiorman A Rordamc and J P Olson Nearly all or the elaborate weddings receptions and parties have been provided with music by either the orchestra or the quartette The latter are strictly engaged for chamber music The Importance of a string quartettes cannot bo exaggerated as it Is well known that the great masters have written perhaps more music for It than for any other combination as It is the most Important string combination ex isting It Is also a wellknown fact that only the best musicians can form part of a quartette as It requires the highest sentimentality in music That is i why but few Instrumentalists make good quartette players G E Skelton Is the leader of the ChrIstensen quar tette C L BERRY Prominent among tho members of Christensens orchestra is Mr 0 L Berry being with the organisation since its arrival In Salt Lake City Mr Berrys experience in the various lines of orchestral and band music for the past twenty years makes him an In valuable addition to this popular or chestra in which he fills various posi tions including prompter and master of ceremonies at the tlanclng academy Mr Bcriys numerous musical exp riences were space to permit would make a decidedly Interesting story He was a member of the old Walker Opoiahousc band and orchestra and had the misfortune of losing hlo In struments in the fire which occurred to that building July 3 1SOO lie was also an active member of Helds band hold ing the position of secretary and treas urer which office ho held for twelve years In fact there has not been a prominent musical organlyatlon In Salt Lake City In which Mr Berry has not taken an active part in some responsi ble capacity cither as instructor con ductor or position of trust He was the secretary of the Salt Lake Musi clans association fat five years and during the same period was organize for the National League of Musician of the United States In vocal wOrk Mr Berry has been a center I J P OLSON J P Olson the cclllstjof the Chris tensen orchestra is the best In the city on the Instrument He Is broadminded broad-minded musician He has done more I kL W than any other man to organize symphony sym-phony orchestras and has always taken ta-ken a prominent part in advancing the musical Interests Mr Olson is also a i member of Christensens string quartette quar-tette I EDD P KIMBALL The subject of this sketch Is one of Prof McClellans favorite pupils Ho Is i on eminent young pianist very talented tal-ented and his picsjbnt ability predicts a very bright future for him Mr KImball now contemplates an extended trip to Europe He has played in tho wc I i i r A C rlstensen orchestra tor some time and Is well liked by all his filends for his gentlemanly Ways Mr Kimhall has written several marches and two steps but his last march is of a high grade and will be published within a short time Mr Kimball has always taken an active ac-tive part In operatic work and has officiated at the pno at tho performances perform-ances of the last three operas by the local i company A AIASTERMAN A Mosterman violinist the assistant conductor of the Christensen orchestra Is a man without a doubt superior su-perior to anybody In Salt Lake City asa j as-a clarinet player Heretofore Mr Ford has confined his work to orchestration but lately he began teaching In which ho has a large class of pupils and is making a name for himself Mr Ford Is oy studious and has figured prom inently In the ChrIstensen orchestra for several years Mi Folds ability as a clarinet player was fully demonstrated some time ugo Upon his ordering an Instrument Instru-ment to bo made by the celebrated BuffotManufacturlng company he received re-ceived a letter from the firm congratu lating him upon his conception of the Instrument PROF G E SKELTON Prof G E Shelton tho eminent vio linist graduated from Trinity college London in 1890 Besides being violin soloist for the Carlisle Corporation conceits for tho season of 98 and 90 he won first place In the North of England EIsteddfod in 1900 a distinc tion not easily obtained and one which speaks highly for the musical ability of the subject of this sketch Prof SKelton came to America in WOO and arrived In Salt Lako City in J August of the same year and has al Jeady In so brief a period easily taken first rank In the musical circles of
