Territory of Utah was organized under a special dispensation from the Department o Nebraska LieutCol George R Maxwell Max-well was Its first commander This post afterward became known a James B McKean post No 1 of the Department of Utah In October 1SS3 the Department of Utah proper was organized and embraced within Its Jurisdiction the then three Territories of Utah Idaho and Montana The two latter Territories before their ad mission mis-sion as States had so far outgrown Utah In their population of old soldiers sol-diers that Idaho first and Montana afterward was eliminated from the Department of Utah and cach formed n separate department leaving Utah n department by Itself with a less number of posts than is required by the rules and regulations to form a department de-partment but as the department had already been formed Utah was allowed al-lowed to retain its charter In addition to the McKcan post In Salt Lake a second post was established estab-lished known as the George R Maxwell 1 Max-well post There wero at that time two posts John A DIx and Logan post of Ogden Utah these have since been consolidated under tho name of the DIx Logan post A post known as Bossltcr post was created at Milford during the boom In that part of the State created by the opening of the great Horn Sliver mining claim That post has since been disbanded and surrendered its charter Hancock post No4 was organized at Park City Utah In the early days of the boom of that mining camp it afterward af-terward disbanded and surrendered its charter I has during the present yearregained Its charter and reorganized reor-ganized with thesame name and number num-ber There Is also a post known as W T Sherman post No 6 at Provo Utah MqKean post was for a long time the only post of the Grand Army in this intermountain region and on Its rolls were many prominent men who distinguished dis-tinguished themselves during the Civil war Among them were Gen P Edward Ed-ward Connor who rose by degrees until un-til at the close of the war and for a year afterward he commanded the Department De-partment of the Plains the largest department de-partment In the United States with an army of 20000 men under his command com-mand He was commissioned to Brevet Maj orG ene ial Gen Fred Salomon was also a private pri-vate member of the post although he won rank of Brevet MojorCeneral during dur-ing the Civil war and won great victories vic-tories at Helena and Jenkins Ferry I and at the close of the war was In command of the Department of Arkansas Ar-kansas Eli I Murray was one of the department commanders and a member mem-ber of the McKean post He won great credit as a brigade commander under Gen Kilpatrlck In Shermans march to the sea Brevet MaJGen Nathen Kimball was also 0 member of that post known as the man who won the first decisive battle against Stonewall Jackson at Winchester March 1SC2 While the hero after whom the department de-partment was first named ard whose name Is now carried by one of the posts in this city was known by all as one cff the most gallant men In the army and was on several occasions In temporary command of the famous Custer cavalry brigade The roster of this post as well as the other posts are filled with the names of many other Comrades who served their country with equal zeal though In less Important Impor-tant commands Each of these posts excepting the Hancock post at Park City have a Womans Relief corps bearing the same name The time has gone by when it can be expected to add many names to the list of the various posts In the Grand Army with the many deaths resulting re-sulting from hardships endured during the war of 1SC1 to 1S65 and the advanced ad-vanced age of all of the members who took part in that struggle the membership mem-bership o the Grand Army of the Republic Re-public Is rapidly diminishing No organization has as yet been created to perpetuate the order of the Gruid I Army of the Republic and probably prob-ably there never will br The requisites of membership are such as to preclude a perpeluation of the order How long It will continue and who the last survivor survi-vor of the organization will be are matters for serious reflection but one thing is certain when the taps are sounded over the grave of the last veteran of the Civil war the I lights 1 will be extinguished from the last post of the Grand Army of the Republic and It will exist thereafter in name and memory only Royal Aicaiium The Royal Arcanum was organized in 1S77 At the last session of the supreme su-preme council resolutions were adopted making provision for the celebration cele-bration of the twentyfifth anniversary anniver-sary of the founding of the order with appropriate exercises The total membership on Octomber 3L 1001 was 210071 and It Is confidently oxpcctqd that the quartermillion mark will have been reached by June 23 1002 In May 1S98 an emergency fund was established and at present amounts to over one million and D half dollars To this fund monthly contributions of approximately 50000 arc made Salt Lake Council No 1517 was Instituted In-stituted In November 1S07 under the direction of Deputy Supreme Regent E A Kimball the charter membership member-ship being thirtY The greatest labor has been put forth In effort to Increase the membership and the growth of the council has surpassed expectation During the past year more than thirty thir-ty have been enrolled an average of one and a half to each meeting night tho second and fourth Thursday of each month The membership includes Knights of Pythias The Order of the Knights of Pythias la a purely I fraternal organization of American birth and growth Its s stem s-tem of laws patterns closely after the civil law of our land having legislative I legisla-tive executive and judicial departments depart-ments Its government Is nn example of monarchial centralization of power coupled with the American theory of eelfgovernment The Grand Lodge meets once a year and has Jurisdiction over certain territory terri-tory usually coextensive with State lines and Is known as a grand Domain The supreme lodge meets biennially and legislates for the entire Pythian world The order ban two branches the Insurance In-surance branch and the military branch The former has a membership of about 69000 carrying over 120000 000 of Insurance The military branch has about 50000 members well officered and well drilled The entire organization Is composed of nearly 600000 members The grand domain of Utah has eighteen eight-een subordinate lodges with 0 membership mem-bership of about 1200 four of the lodges being In Salt Lake City Louis H Farnsworth and E W Duncan are supremo representatives F W Gardiner Gardi-ner taking the place of the latter on January 1902 January Thb Woodmen of tho World The Woodmen of the World is a fraternal fra-ternal Insurance society organized In Omaha Neb on June 1890 The entire en-tire domain Is divided Into three jurisdictIons Juris-dictions 17 The Sovereign comprising compris-ing the Eastern and Southern States the Canadian embracing the Dominion of Canada and this the Pacific comprising com-prising the nine Western States California Cali-fornia Colorado Idaho Montana Nevada Ne-vada Oregon Utah Washington and Wyoming This Jurisdiction was organized on August 1 1S90 In the entire order there Is now a membership of two and fifty thousand seventyelght thousand being In the I nine Western States The headquarters of the Sovereign jurisdiction are at Omaha Neb The head office of the Pacific Jurisdiction is at Denver Colo The objects of the order are the I maintenance of a fraternal beneficiary society providing and maintaining < benefit fund by means of assessments on its members The order has paid in the three Jurisdictions Ju-risdictions over 10000000 to the beneficiaries bene-ficiaries Three millions having been paid in the nine Western States The several jurisdictions are entirely separate financially but the same ritualistic ceremonies prevail everywhere every-where The age limit for new applicants is from IS to 50 years There are eleven camps or lodges In the State of Utah with a membership of 2000 The order Is growing very rapidly and is in excellent financial condition having 350000 In the reserve fund and 150000 In the benefit fund The Order Women of Woodcraft Is an auxiliary to thc Woodmen of the World Mrs C C Van Orsdal is the grand guardian with headquarters at Pendleton Or This branch of the order 01 now has a membership of 30000 Its plan of organization is similar to the parent order Knights of tho Maccabees During the year 1901 the Order of the Maccabees has continued in its successful career both In Utah nnd throughout the world The total membership mem-bership for the Knights and Ladles of the Maccabees exceeded 550000 on January 1 1902 n net gain of near 100000 during the year just closed while the surplus In cash and government govern-ment bonds on November 1st had reached the magnificent sum of 200161050 The Maccabee Temple at Port Huron Mich has been corn pleted and entirely paid for and furnishes fur-nishes the home for the three blanches of the order the Supreme Tent the Great Camp for Michigan and the Supreme Su-preme Hive which Is the ladles auxiliary Inry of the Maccabees Thls home was built with special provision for the work of the order ana Is as near as possible a fireproof structure In Utah the Maccabecs have made good progress having twenty tents In the larger cities In the State with a total membership at the close of this year reaching 1500 while there are eleven hives with a membership of nearly 300 New tents have been established es-tablished at Richfield Payson and Robinson The membership both Knights and Ladles has more than doubled In Utah during the past biennial bien-nial term The object of the Maccabees Is to furnish the fullest protection to its members at a reasonable rate and to guard its finances In every particular An effort will be made during the next year to increase the membership mem-bership In Utah to 3000 In order to form a State organization There are two tents in Salt Lake City with a membership of nearly 600 Tent No 2 meets In the 1 O O F building on every Thursday evening Tent No 12 meets In the A O U W hal on Main street the first and third I Tuesday evenings of the month Sprlngvlllc Tent No 9 Is the second largest tent In the State and Silver Tdnt No 1 of Ogden the third Tin tic Tent No 13 at Eureka Is the next tc in building where all the other Masonic orders are located and meet regularly on the first Thursday In each month At stated Intervals during dur-ing the month the orders of tile Rel Cross Temple and Knights of Malta are conferred upon candidates The year 1JOl has been a satisfactory one to the commandcry and the membership mem-bership and financial condition are In a most excellent state The annual election elec-tion of officers was held on the first Thursday In December William II Cunningham was reelected for the second time as cmmlnent commander and the following ofilcers were elected
