The Lady Vikes return to the mats and uneven bars this evening with a meet at Brighton at 6 p.m. Viking gymnasts open with wins By TOM HARALDSEN VIEWMONT The Viewmont High gymnastics team used solid performances from their compulsory and optional squad members to win a triangular meet in the season-opener Wednesday Wednes-day afternoon. Viewmont finished with a score of 241.40, beating out West at 194 and Highland at 111. The Vikings are multiple time repeat champions of Region Four, and should be in the hunt again this year, even though Regions Three and Four have been combined. Pacing the Viewmont effort were Josi Maynard, who took first on the vault despite a finger injury with a score of 8.45; Amanda Davis, who took second on the bars (7.25), third on the beam (7.95) and second all-around optional (29.35); and Andrea Perry, fourth in bars and fourth in optional all-around. Solid compulsory performances were also turned in by Shelly Huddlestone, with an all-around win at 34.25; second all-around placer Kelly Waite (31.90), and third all-around placer Lonnie Russon (29. 15). Brandy Brown won the compulsory vault with a score of 8.55. The Viking performance was even more impressive when considering that three outstanding optional performers, Brooke Bingham, co-captain Mardee McNeil and Kristen Youngberg, missed the meet for a variety of reasons. Coach Jane Arhart was quite pleased with the early-season performance. The Lady Vikings continue their season with a dual meet at Brighton tonight at 6 p.m. They will then travel to Granger for a 4 p.m. dual meet next Wednesday. |
