Show VMS gets computers By CHERIE HUBER The journalism classes at View-mont View-mont High School received three new Macintosh computers in January. Janu-ary. The $4,000 the computers cost! provided by a time management seminar conducted by Hyrum Smith of the Franklin Institute who is the husband of the PTSA president presi-dent Gail Smith. Some 80 people enrolled in the four hour workshop which was held in early November. The participants parti-cipants paid $55 each for the workshop work-shop which regularly would have been about $80. Franklin Institute donated the binders, fillers, and other materials to the fundraiser which made it possible for-400 percent per-cent of the proceeds to go toward the purchase of the computers. The new machines were added to the desk top publishing system acquired by the school last year. The system included two computers compu-ters and a laser printer plus the software needed to do many dL. rent kinds of publications including the Viking Viewer. Last year the school newspaper and the school literary magazine were prepared on the new system. This year the potential of the equipment equip-ment has been recognized and many other Viewmont High departments de-partments requested computer time to prepare programs and visual aids. The demand caused a bottleneck which the PTSA eliminated elimin-ated with the additional machines. The system is still growing however. Currently funds are being sought to add at least one more computer and to also add another 20 meg hard disk. Mr. Zeeman, journalism teacher, expressed appreciation to the PTSA and the Franklin Institute Insti-tute for their assistance. He said, "With the addition of these new computers, we have the finest desk top publishing system in the state for use in a school." He pointed out that this gives the students an opportunity to work with systems used in modern publishing pub-lishing houses and offers them realistic experience. In addition the computers provide a greater opportunity for students to publish their writings. "We hope to extend publications at Viewmont to include in-clude a scholarly journal with the best writing from all disciplines in the school," he said. |
