Show Dramatic two dog rescue paid in fall The Humane Society of Utah announced that the $650 bill for the dramatic rescue of two dogs stranded on a mountain top near Moab last week has been paid in full, thanks to the generosity of Utah residents who were touched by the moving story and sent in their contributions to help out. "The dogs' owners, Chuck and Sandy Washburn, had been willing to pay half of the total bill," said Katharine Brant, spokeswoman for the Humane Society. "When we made a public appeal for donations, dona-tions, it was undisputed that the first $325 would go directly to pay off the Washburns' portion. Anything Any-thing after that would be used to meet the Society's part of the ex-' ex-' penses." By Tuesday afternoon just five days after daring climbers plucked the dogs from their precarious preca-rious perch kind-hearted Utahns had supplied enough funds to cover all the costs of the rescue mission. "We are deeply touched by the outpouring of love and concern that the community has shown for the plight of those dogs," said Miss Brant, "and we want to thank every ev-ery single individual who sent something to help us out. Even splitting the costs, paying that bill ourselves would have been a big hardship on both the Washburns and the Humane Society." The Humane Society of Utah is a private organization and is not funded by any taxes or other public monies, Miss Brant pointed out. "That's why we don't have anything any-thing extra in our bank account," she said. "This episode with Pepper Pep-per and Sam, the dogs, has brought home to us how devastating an emergency could be. Getting them to safety, and soon, was our first priority figuring out how to pay for it would have to come later. But we'd like to be able to have a little reserve fund set aside for just such episodes as this one. We sincerely thank everyone for the generous help already given, and would like to note that any further donations for the Sam and Pepper fund will be used to build up an account that will only be touched for some unexpected un-expected special community need, like this incident." The Humane Society of Utah will gratefully accept any contributions contribu-tions to this emergency community fund.
