Show Lancers, Falcons win Bountiful, Davis lose heartbreakers as state boys' basketball begins By TOM HARALDSEN Sports Editor SALT LAKE CITY There will be no state boys' basketball champion from south Davis County Coun-ty this year, as both Bountiful and Davis lost first round games at the University of Utah's Huntsman Center. The picture is brighter, however, for both Layton and Clearfield. BONNEVILLE 42 DAVIS 40 In Friday's first game, the Darts lost a heartbreaker to the defending state champions, who lived by similar small margins of victory in "sast year's tournament. It was Welling who scored with 1:54 left in the quarter that handed Davis a 28-27 lead after three. The fourth quarter belonged, however, to Bonneville's Kendall Youngblood. The talented all-state senior performer helped the Lakers Lak-ers build a 35-31 lead with five minutes mi-nutes left. Sargent sank two free throws to make it 35-33, but moments mo-ments later it was 38-35 with another Youngblood score. Welling scored on a rebound inside in-side to make it 38-37 with 2:05 left, ' but Youngblood again answered with a hoop. He was fouled on the shot, but missed the free throw, " leaving Davis down 40-37 with 1 :38 to go. The Darts worked the ball into Capron who scored and was fouled with 1:03 left. He made the critical free throw, knotting things at 40-all. Bonneville worked for one last shot, Beard taking a pass from Youngblood and banking one in with five seconds left. David still had a chance. After a time out, the Darts worked the ball to Bryan Emery, whose three-pointer at the buzzer rimmed out. Welling led Davis with 13 points, Capron had nine, Sargent six and both Olsen and Emery five each. Youngblood had 18 points for Bon neville, while Beard had 11 and Jimmy Woolverton nine. LAYTON 78 BOUNTIFUL 72 The Lancers won Friday's third game to keep their hopes of a state title alive, holding off a great Brave rally in the final two minutes for the win. This was a game of streaks, as Bountiful played extremely well in the first period, both teams were about equal in the second, and Layton ran off 16 straight points in the third to set up a great finish. It looked in the beginning like the Braves' night. With the score tied at 8-all, Jeff Reynolds of Bountiful canned five straight shots, and teammates Ryan Jacobs, Mitch Thain and Tony Smith got in the act as Bountiful took a 28-16 first quarter quar-ter lead. Layton fought back in the opening two minutes of the second quarter, as Wes Nance sank a free throw, Albert Chappell made four freebies, and Nance canned a jumper jum-per to make it 28-23. Things remained tight the rest of the way, as Bountiful maintained its lead at the half, 45-38. Lancer coach Stan Buchanan made some adjustments at half-time, half-time, however, because the Lancers Lan-cers came out firing in the third period. Rod Dixon scored to make it 45-40, and Jacobs countered for Bountiful. Stan Banks tallied for Layton to make it 47-42, but Cory Sovereen scored for the Braves and the lead was 49-42 with 6:30 left in the quarter. In the next five minutes, Layton ran off 16 unanswered points, the first six coming on free throws from Dixon, Nance and Chappell. Layton took its first lead since the opening minutes when Nance hurried hur-ried a jumper. Chappell scored, Nance added another hoop, Robbie Rob-bie Trujillo scored and Chappell made another basket to push the Lancers to a 58-49 lead with 2:04 left. Bountifulgbt back into the score book when Tony Smith canned a three-point shot, and Troy Fuller scored from putside in the final minute mi-nute to leave the Layton lead at 58-54 after three. Reynolds tied the game for Bountiful as the fourth quarter began, be-gan, making two free throws and then hitting a jumper to make it 58-all. Layton responded with five straight, two by Banks and three by Nance. It was nip-and-tuck the rest of the way, though Layton appeared to have the game on ice when Chappell scored with 1:04 left to make it 73-66. Fuller scored with 37 seconds left to make it 73-68, and Jacobs drew an offensive foul on Dixon on the inbounds pass, then made one free throw. Mitch Thain rebounded and scored to make it 73-71 with 32 seconds left. Six points in five seconds for the Braves. Smith stole the inbounds pass again, and he was fouled. He made the first shot, missed the second, but Bountiful grabbed the rebound. But Dixon stole a Bountiful pass, raced downcourt and missed a. layin. Chappell grabbed the rebound, re-bound, scored and was fouled. That made it 76-72, and Nance was fouled at the end to make the final score 78-72. Nance had a great game, scoring 29 points for the Lancers, including 13 of 15 from the line. Chappell had 20 and Banks 10 for Layton. Bountiful Boun-tiful was led by- Thain with 18, Smith with 16 and Reynolds with 14. CLEARFIELD 73 BINGHAM 57 Don't let this score fool you, this was a close contest through the first three quarters. The Falcons took off near the end of the third quarter, however, faster than an F-16. Paced by Russ Larson and Mike Tolbert, Clearfield jetted to a 58-37 lead with 5:18 left in the game. Bingham could never recover, as the Falcons moved forward into the second round. Tolbert had 16 points for Clearfield, Clear-field, sharing the spotlight with Larson (20), and Bracken Larsen (10 points) and Jeff Painter (10 points). The tournament continues this Tuesday through Friday.
