Show Bums retires from SDFD South Davis Fire District firefighters fire-fighters threw a retirement party Feb. 10 for John Burns, a part-time fireman for the district and for North Salt Lake for the past 21 years. In 1985, that department merged with the South Davis Fire District, which serves North Salt Lake, Woods Cross, West Bountiful, Centerville and the unincorporated areas of Davis County south of Farm-ington. Farm-ington. In all his years of fighting fires, Burns said, he was never injured. He was treated for smoke inhalation inhala-tion once, but he said that was only a minor problem from which he quickly and completely recovered. He will never forget his first fire. "It was at night in July, 1967 shortly short-ly after the North Salt Lake City fire department was organized," he said. "We had a big party and received re-ceived our charter and were officially offi-cially in business, and within a few hours a huge fire broke out at the Standard Oil refinery just south of North Salt Lake. "We fought that blaze 36 hours straight with several other neighboring neigh-boring departments, including Salt Lake City." Burns said he will miss fighting tires, but will enjoy spending more time with his wife, Fay, and their six grown children and eicht grandchildren. grand-children. Burns retired in 1979 from Hill Air Force Base, after more than 38 years of federal service, including tours with the U.S. Navy in World War II and the Korean War. He also was a part-time pilot with the Civil Air Patrol from 1952 through 1967 and a reserve police officer for North Salt Lake from 1959 to 1967. |
