Show Concertmaster Matson solos on March 4-5th Utah Symphony concertmaster Ralph Matson takes a solo turn March 4-5 as he performs Camille Saint-Saens' Concerto No. 3 for violin and orchestra with the Utah Symphony. Music director Joseph Silverstein leads the orchestra in this program, which includes Saint-Saens' Overture to the Opera, "LaPrincesse Jaune," and Tchaikovskv's Svmohonv No. 5. The 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday Symphony Hall concerts will be preceded by free talks about the music given by Maestro Silverstein at 7:15 p.m. In his third season as concert-master, concert-master, Mr. Matson has held positions posi-tions with major orchestras for more than a decade. After a season with the Cleveland Orchestra in 1976-77, he was appointed assistant assis-tant concertmaster with the Minnesota Minne-sota Orchestra. He held that position posi-tion for eight years, until joining the Utah Symphony in 1985. Mr. Matson received his bachelor's bache-lor's degree from Yale College and a master's from the Yale School of Music; his principal teachers were Steven Staryk and Joseph Silverstein. Silver-stein. While Saint-Saens' La Princesse Jaune has not found its way into the popular repertoire, the overture is heard often on the concert stage.
