"West Side Story" is based on the Shakespearean tragedy, "Romeo and Juliet," but the story is placed in a modern setting and is told using today's upbeat language music and dance. The music combines some of Leonard Bernstein's most gorgeous music with Stephen Son-dheim's Son-dheim's unforgettable lyrics. The script by Arthur Laurents is filled with emotion and completes the American classic. Set in the 1950s, the story is about ab-out young lovers torn apart by the competitive hatred between two rival street gangs (the Jets and the Sharks) on the West Side of New York. Tony, the ex-Jet leader, falls in love with Maria, the sister of the Shark's leader, Bernardo. In this emotion-filled story, the rivalry between be-tween the two gangs heightens as Tony's and Maria's love grows stronger. The gangs plan an ultimate ulti-mate rumble which will prove the ownership of the territory. The tragedy that results makes the gangs realize too late the use-lessness use-lessness of their rivalry. Directing this production is Cjty , Rep artistic director, Joanne Parker. Par-ker. Assisting Joanne on the artistic artis-tic staff are Marilyn Montgomery, choreographer; Richard Chatelain, music director and Mearle Marsh, vocal coach. Montgomery and Parker are emphasizing the choreography and dancing for this production which contains several ensemble numbers num-bers and rumble scenes to show off the talent of the City Rep En- semble. The lead role of Maria will be performed by Kitchell Jones. This will be a City Rep debut for Jones. A Cyprus High School graduate, Jones toured Europe with Sound of America. She also appeared in a Houston production of "My Fair Lady." The male lead will be played by James Horrocks, also a new actor to City Rep. Bernardo will be played by Randal Ran-dal S. Hickman who has appeared in several City Rep performances including this season's "Babes in Toyland" where he played the role of Bamaby. Jayceen Marie Craven will play the role of Bernardo's girlfriend, Anita. Craven has performed in Hansen Planetarium's Zap Show and in the Utah Shakespearean Festival. The production will be performed per-formed in its entirety rather than in the theatrical concert style. Discounts are available for children, chil-dren, senior citizens and groups of 10 or more. r 1 1 ' ' |
