Show Bountiful residents inducted Seven Bountiful residents attending Brigham Young University Univer-sity were among 269 students initiated initi-ated Feb. 16 into the national academic honor society Phi Kappa Phi. Thev are Leslie and Ann Butler, Joanne Rust, Cheryl Sudweeks, Robert B. Moon, Rosanne Pitt and David S. Doty. Twenty BYU faculty members and administrators also were inducted in-ducted during ceremonies that featured fea-tured Ardeth G. Kapp, general president of the Young Women of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, speaking on "Power in the Word." Maren M. Mouritsen, president of the BYU Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, said certificates of membership member-ship were presented to 38 graduate students in the upper 10 percent of their class and to 231 seniors and juniors with a 3.75 or higher grade point average. , "Phi Kappa Phi is the largest and most prestigious of the general honor hon-or societies that accept members from all academic disciplines," Mouritsen said. "Being invited into the society is a great honor, signifying signify-ing academic distinction and integrity integ-rity of character." Leslie and Anne Butler are daughters of Jay and Kay Butler. Leslie is a senior in English-French in secondary education and a 1983 graduate of Bountiful High School where she was foreign language Sterling Scholar, Girls' State delegate dele-gate and high honors graduate. At BYU she belongs to the English Society and French Club and participated parti-cipated in the Study Abroad Programs Prog-rams in London and Paris. Anne, a senior in elementary education, graduated with high honors in 1984 from BHS where she was a Girls' State delegate. Recipient Reci-pient of a Hinckley Scholarship for the past two years, she performed on the touring team of the International Interna-tional Folk Dancers the past four years, worked in the ASB YU social office one year and went on the Study Abroad program to London. Rust, a senior in music and daughter of Joseph C. and Suzanne Rust, graduated with high honors in 1984 from Bountiful High School where she was music Sterling Scholar Scho-lar and a member of Madrigals, A'cappella Choir and National Honor Society. At BYU, she performs per-forms on the viola with the Philharmonic Philhar-monic and Chamber Orchestras, participated in the Vienna Study Abroad program, is on the National Dean's List and a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society Socie-ty and Utah Music Teachers' Association. Asso-ciation. Sudweeks, a senior in computer science and mathematics, is a daughter of Dean A. and Carolyn F. Sudweeks. She graduated with high honors in 1985 from Viewmont High School where she was mathematics mathe-matics Sterling Scholar and vice president of the National Honor Society. At BYU she has been on the dean's list and has received Presidential and Computer Science Scholarships. Moon, a senior in economics and English, is a son of H. Brent and Carol Moon now of Arlington, Tex. He graduated with high honors in 1983 from Viewmont High School where he was studentbody vice president and football letterman three times and track twice. At BYU he played on the rugby team one year and his intramural football team won 10th place in a national tournament. Pitt, a senior with a double major in psychology and music, is a daughter of Charles H. and Margaret Mar-garet P. Pitt. She graduated in 1982 from Woods Cross High School where she was in the band, Sterling Scholar finalist in music, National Merit Scholar and member of the National Honor Society. At BYU she has performed with the Wind Symphony, Philharmonic Orchestra and University Chorale and won a concerto competition to perform as a flute soloist last fall with the Philharmonic Orchestra. She served a mission to Japan for the LDS Church. Doty, a senior in Spanish with a minor in political science, is a son of Dr. and Mrs. Donald B. Doty. He graduated in 1983 from West High School in Iowa City, la., where he was in the National Honor Hon-or Society, Spanish award winner in the U.S. Achievement Academy, member of the All-State Choir and swim letterman. An Eagle Scout, he received a Presidential Pres-idential Scholarship to BYU, is a member of the Golden Key National Nation-al Honor Society, Oratorio Choir and attended the Washington Seminar. |
