Show Wildcat swimmers 5th, 12th after state 4-A championship action By TOM HARALDSEN Sports Editor SALT LAKE CITY Brighton High continued its domination of state 4-A swimming, capturing both boys' and girls' titles in competition com-petition at the University of Utah Friday and Saturday. Its stranglehold strangle-hold may be slipping a bit, however. Skyline was a close second, and East was third, while Woods Cross and Cottonwood tied for fifth in boys' scoring. The Wildcats took 12th in girls' competition. Also among boys', Viewmont placed 10th and Bountiful 16th, while the Viking girls came in 19th. These results were supplied to the Clipper by an official at the meet, and all placings could not be confirmed con-firmed at presstime. Best among the local boys' finishers was Viewmont's Chris Knolls, listed as a seventh place finisher in the 100 breast. The best finish of locals as a relay team was the fifth place of Woods Cross swimmers Craig Kossin, Eric McCune, Shawn Stephenson and Jeff Riley in the 200 medley relay. The Viewmont team took sixth in the same event. Woods Cross also placed sixth in the free relay, as the team of Tim Rankin, Dave Diaz, Riley and Justin Mann received medals. Other top finishers were Viewmont's View-mont's Greg Garff, eighth in the 200 IM, with Kossin of Woods Cross 12th in that event; Diaz and Rankin placing 12th and 13th respectively re-spectively in the 200 free, Todd Orchard of Bountiful taking 15th in the 100 fly, with Riley of Woods Cross 10th; Diaz and Rankin going 12th and 13th again in the 500 free; Kossin, 11th, Mark Barnett 15th and Ryan McCune 16th in the 100 back (all Woods Cros's); and Stephenson and Eric McCune going 11th and 13th in the 100 breast. Woods Cross divers Dan Pace (8th) and Carter Moore (13th) also placed. Only three local girls were listed as top 16 finishers: Woods Cross diver Kyndell Rowe in eighth; Angie Olson of Woods Cross, 14th in the 100 breast; and Suzi Green of Woods Cross, 11th in both the 50 and 100 free. There was another local element of this year's championship in that East coach Tom Thorum, who lives in Centerville, was named Male Coach of the Year. The Leopards lose a lot of swimmers to graduation, but it is obvious that Thorum has his team headed in the right direction. |
