Show 50 yes of service Daniel Lawrence Miller has completed 50 years of service to tfe Farmington Volunteer Fire Department. De-partment. He was awarded his 50 year star pin as secretary-treasurer recently. A native of Farmington, Miller Joined the fire department in 1935 and at that time the department had only a two wheel hose cart to fight fires. It was not long until they had a new Model A Ford truck of which the firemen were very proud. There were perhaps eight or ten firemen in the beginning and at pre-sent pre-sent there are 25 volunteer firemen. They now have two big pumpers and one mini-pumper, as well as a water tank pump. The department also has three brush trucks for fighting the fires in canyons and mountains. When Lawrence was eight years old, he worked in the Robert Griffith Grif-fith Market, which was located where the Davis County Bank now stands. After graduating from Davis High School, he served Farming-ton Farming-ton City as a dog catcher and was city marshal for three years. Miller was a clerk and then postmaster in Farmington for 30 years, retiring in 1980. He remembers four major fires while serving and all caused by the high winds for which Farmington is noted. These were some years ago. One was the Smoot Dairy fire in Centerville. Lagoon also had a major ma-jor fire and the Compton Bench area was blackened when the east winds blew the fire to other areas. The Amasa Clark home on State Street was burned three times during dur-ing the years. Sometimes during the winter weather, the water would freeze in the hose, causing many problems. The firemen had medical training to take care of almost any emergency. For many years, the siren was blown to alert the men to any fire or emergency. During the past few years, there has been no general alarm to waken the men and citizens, as each man now carries his own pager. Ron Nelson is the present fire chief. Miller received the certificate certifi-cate for having completed the medical self-help training course; the cardiopulmonary resuscitation courses from the American Heart Association. He received a special citation from the Utah State Fireman's Association in 1964 for volunteer services. The American National Red Cross issued certificates for completion of many standard courses to all the firemen over the years, kj |
