Viewmont clinched a state playoff berth with the win, while Davis will play an inter-region game sometime this week to try and earn passage into next week's state 4-A tournament at Murray High. Viewmont, Bountiful clinch berths in girPs tournament By TOM HARALDSEN ; Sports Editor I KAYSVILLE Early in the I preseason, Viewmont girls' bas-i bas-i ketball coach Vi Hillman knew that ; if she was to take the Vikings to state, she'd have to play her sophomores, sopho-mores, a group of players loaded with talent. The results have been more than gratifying. But Thursday at Davis High, it was the play of a senior that sparked the Vikings to a 59-43 win over the Darts that assured Viewmont View-mont of a state berth. Sharwan Smith, who has platooned at center this year, came off the bench in the fourth quarter when the score was still close and scored eight points as well as grabbed three key re-. re-. bounds to help Viewmont to its sixth win in region, and 14th of the year. Davis now can plan on an inter-region inter-region game sometime this week prior to the beginning of the state tournament next week at Murray High. Viewmont won Thursday despite de-spite the fact that Davis clearly took more shots. In fact, the Vikings Vik-ings finished with 18-36 from the field (50 percent), while Davis took 71 shots from the field, but hit just ,17 of them. "They put up a lot of shots, , that's for sure, "Hillman said afterwards. after-wards. "I thought we showed good patience out there, and we finally got our backdoor plays to work." Certainly one reason for the shot discrepancy was the offensive ' game plans both teams were using. Davis came out firing the ball, , while Viewmont was working it around, looking for a shot inside. . At halftime, with Viewmont up 17- 016, the Vikes had taken just 17 shots, making seven, while Davis had put up 34 shots, making eight. Davis never folded, even when Viewmont built a 36-27 lead entering enter-ing the fourth quarter. Trailing 42-34, 42-34, Davis came back as Becky Rees hit two free throws, Amy En-ders En-ders connected, and it was 42-38 with 3:23 left. Jenny Siddoway sank a free throw, then, after her second shot rimmed out, Smith grabbed an offensive rebound, passed to Tiffany Tif-fany Twitchell, who was fouled and made her two shots. Smith made two freebies herself seconds later, and the Vikes coasted home. Twitchell and Melissa Eggett led Viewmont with 16 each, Smith and Kim Blackham added eight, Becky Yeates six and Siddoway four. For Davis, Rees had a strong performance perform-ance with 17 points, while Cindy Moon came off the bench for eight points. Heather Peel had six, as did Enders. BOUNTIFUL 59 EAST 32 In Salt Lake City, the Lady Braves earned at least third place and a state berth with a thrashing of East. It was again a balanced Bountiful attack, as Lisa Wilkinson, Wilkin-son, Mona Hibbert and Stephanie Reading all scored 14 points, and Julia Thornley added 13. Bountiful, now 6-3 in league, 10-9 10-9 overall, closed the regular season Tuesday with a game at home against league champ Woods Cross at 4 p.m. East fell to 2-7 in league, 2-17 overall. WOODS CROSS 79 HIGHLAND 30 At Woods Cross, the Lady Wildcats Wild-cats coasted past winless Highland to move to 9-0, 17-2 overall. Amy Mason just about sewed up the league scoring title with 25 points, while Carolyn Knight added 24, Marci Heaps IS and Jodie Warhurst 13. Woods Cross traveled to Bountiful Bounti-ful Tuesday, while Davis finished at Highland and East went to Viewmont. View-mont. The state tournament begins Monday at Murray High School, and the upper bracket will feature both Bountiful and Viewmont, regardless re-gardless of which one finishes second. Woods Cross will play its first game on Tuesday, and Davis, should it earn the fourth berth, will likely play Tuesday against Clearfield Clear-field at 8: 10 p.m. |
