Show BETTER ISO MOVE RECEIVESSUPPDRT Conditions Greatly Improved Im-proved in Past Two Years. i There is a good reason for the space being given the subject of road improvement im-provement in the press of late the subject sub-ject drawing the attention of some of the rnosl prominent writers of tho ! country their findings supplemented by governmental and other reliable j reports. Tho splendid results that aro beginning to show as a result of the general demund for better and, above all, through connecting roads, is surprising sur-prising when conditions existing tivt years ago are considered. Attention to this matter has been focused recently by the records ed-tablished ed-tablished by some of the motor car manufacturers in sending their cars on long distance drives, the most popular being that across the country from New York to fean Francisco. Crossing the continent is now but a matter of time, where but a few years back it was a journey of discovery lor the motorist. The most significant record mada during tho past year, and one that emphasized improved road conditions, as well as the tremendous advances made in motor car design and construction, construc-tion, was that of Miss Amanda Pruess, who drove the entire length of the Lincoln highway in but Tittle more than eleven days. This 3300 mile drive was made in an Oldsmobilo eight, and the woman driver held the wheel herself for the entire distance. This performance was a complete indorsement of the Lincoln highway as a through, connected route of motor, mo-tor, or, for that matter, any mode of travel. Even had the automobile been brought to its present high state of perfection five years ago, such a drive by a woman would have been considered consid-ered impossible. There was no road which she could have followed unassisted unas-sisted and unguided. The Lincoln highway is far from a boulevard for its entire distance, but it is a real road and can be traveled in comfort by any tourist in good weather. The Lincoln highway hag set an example. Good roads organizations modeled to a degree after tho Lincoln Lin-coln Highway association have been formed and are working earnestlv a ad accomplishing results in the endeavor to further the construction of through, permanent highways. If results are to be obtained in tho building of the roads of the entire country at the same rate they have been realized in the advancement of the Lincoln highway project America may soon have reason to be proud of her roads, rather than apologi.c for them as it is necessary to do today. |
