Show TWO ARE KILLED IN COFFEE HOUSE ROW Shooting Follows Accusation of Theft; Slayer Claims Self-' Self-' defense. Charged with slaying two fellow countrymen, James Sklavanos, 28, proprietor pro-prietor of a coffee house, and George Sallas, a grocery clerk, at Copperfield, Bingham Canyon, yesterday morning, George Vanos, a Greek, was lodged in the. county jail last night by Deputy Sheriff Joseph Ealeigh. who arrested him a few minutes after the shooting. Vanos entered the Kanto coffee house and ordered a meal. A few minutes min-utes later an argument developed between be-tween Sallas and Vanos in which the former charged that Vanos on Thursday Thurs-day night stole $106 from him. Skla-vanos Skla-vanos is said to have attempted to pacify both men. Vanos refused to listen to Sklavanos. He shot twice at Sklavanos. Tho first shot passed through Sklavanos 's lungs and the second shot piercod his right wrist. Sklavanos died a few minutes after 11 o'clock- Sallas attempted to wrest the firearm from Vanos, but Vanos fired at him, the bullet passing through the top of the head. Sallas died at 3:35 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Other persons in the restaurant fled to the street and Deputy Sheriff Ka-lelgh Ka-lelgh was called. He placed Vanos under un-der arrest. When taken to jail he calmly calm-ly took off his shoes and laid on a bed iii a cell and slept. He was awakened about 5:30 o'clock last evening and brought to the countv jail. 8klavanos and Saflas are reputed to have borne good characters in the Greek colony. Sallas had been employed em-ployed in the canyon for the last eight years. Little is known of Vanos except that he had been employed as a laborer by the Utah Copper company recently. Vanos declared that he acted in self-defense. |
