Show BliEf DLDFIELD TO TRyjfiEBlCSC Will Bring Forth a New Motor of 150-mile an Hour Speed. The versatile Barney Oldf ield has broken out again. This time with the most astounding prediction of his sensational sen-sational career. Barney is going to cut into the long-talked of tbree-miles-a-minute class, to be made possible only by the use of a newly designed body, fitted to a chassis equipped with a huge twin-six motor being built in the shops of Hairy Miller, the Los Angeles gasoline engine wizard. Tlere 's what Barney has to say about hisnext stunt: My sepcialty is going the other fellow one better. When they were saying nothing could beat the old 'Ford 999, I woke them up by .breaking .break-ing the records with t lie Winton Bullet. Then my Green Dragon kicked the Bullet's marks in the shins. They had not recovered from the surprise of the 120 Beuz records I 6et when I became the world 's speed king by sending tho 300 Blitzen Benz along the Florida beach faster than any human had ever sped. The present speed mark has stood long enough, and just about the time the writers begin to send me into retirement, I am going to giv-e them the surprise of their lives. Within the next three months T will be on the Florida beach with the greatest speed creation ever built--To mention that Harry Miller, whom I consider the world's best builder of automobile motors, is .building the car, should be enough to insure its class. The body will be an ultra streamline design and will be absolutely unsmashable. Nothing can happen to the driver if the machine capsizes. A periscope peri-scope will enable mc to see ahead, and 150 miles an hour speed will be the pace she will step. After I set the new speed marks I will send the car over some of the : speedways to see if the claims of the different builders as to the limit of speed of their tracks are true. I even may take a whirl at the dirt tracks to make a clean sweep of the slate. For competition on the speedways I will have the fastest 300-inch motor in the world. Miller is also building this for mc, and I will show it for the first time in competition compe-tition at the Indianapolis speedway on Memorial day. When this motor is stepped on it will mean the book is closed for those French and English Eng-lish jobs. But, above all, let the speed fang manicure their optics, for ''Old Barney,'' the graybeard of the racing rac-ing game, is out for blood. Retire? Oh, maybe in another five years or so. Not before. Oldfield also imparts the further startling news that the business end of his 1917 tour is in the hands of his former manager, William H. (Bill) Pickens, who for years acted as managerial man-agerial chaperon for the "Master Driver.' In view of the fact that Old-field Old-field and Pickens have not anpeared in a Damon and Pythias role for a couple of seasons, news of their reunion w ill surprise followers of the racing game. Pickens will continue to handle the managerial reins for De Lloyd Thompson, Katherine Stinson. loop-tbe-loop aviators, and a dozen other lesser lights among the human-bird fraternity. |
